What is the best versatile zoom lens for Panasonic S5II users?

I've been shooting on the GH series forever but finally made the jump to the S5II for the phase detect. Honestly the autofocus is night and day compared to my old GH5 but I'm totally lost on the L-mount lens ecosystem. I'm heading to Tokyo in three weeks for a mix of street and landscape work and I really dont want to be swapping primes in the rain.

I looked at the 20-60 kit but I need more reach on the long end. Is the Sigma 24-70 Art too heavy for all day carry? Or should I just grab the Panasonic 24-105 f4 for the dual IS? My budget is roughly $1100 so I'm trying to find the best versatile zoom for a one-lens setup...

Re: The Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S....

  • I completely agree that the native 24-105mm is a fantastic choice for the S5II because the Dual IS is just amazing! It is such a solid performer for handheld street work. If you are looking for even more versatility or less weight for your Tokyo trip, here are two incredible technical alternatives:
  • Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 MACRO O.I.S.: This is an absolute beast for travel! It gives you massive reach while staying incredibly compact and weather-sealed. Perfect for rainy days.
  • Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary: If you want that f/2.8 speed but find the Art series too heavy, this is the perfect middle ground for all-day carry. The 28-200mm is honestly mind-blowing because it is the smallest lens in its class and the autofocus is snappy on the S5II! It fits your budget perfectly too.

Been thinking about your trip and honestly, most mid-range zooms have annoying compromises. Before I dig deeper, are you mostly shooting night street scenes or is the reach for daytime landscapes?

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.

The Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. is the logical choice for a one-lens setup. Ive used it on the S5II and the Dual IS performance for handheld work is superior to third-party options. While the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is faster, the 105mm reach is more useful for landscapes. It fits your budget perfectly too.
