Which cage is recommended for Panasonic S5II video setups?

Honestly so fed up with this current setup right now because I feel like I am fighting my gear more than actually filming anything. I bought this cheap no-name cage off Amazon a few weeks ago thinking hey a cage is a cage right but man was I wrong. The top dial on my S5II is almost impossible to turn because the metal frame sits way too close and every time I try to swap batteries during a shoot I have to use my fingernail to pry the door open because the clearance is just non-existent. It is honestly driving me insane and I am ready to just chuck it in the trash.

Im a wedding videographer based in Portland and I have a huge three-day shoot coming up in exactly two weeks so I am on a bit of a time crunch here to get this sorted. I need something that actually feels solid and lets me access all the ports without a struggle. I use the HDMI out to a Ninja V constantly and my current cage puts so much stress on the cable that I am genuinely worried about snapping the port. My logic was that I should save money on the cage and spend it on a better top handle but now I realize if the base is bad the whole thing just feels like a cheap toy.

So I was thinking about just grabbing the standard SmallRig black mamba one since everyone seems to have it but then I saw the Tilta version has those extra points for their cooling fan and even though the S5II has a fan already I wonder if the ergonomics are better? Then there is the Kondor Blue stuff which looks amazing in that space gray color but it is definitely pushing my budget of $150 and I dont know if the extra money is just for the aesthetics or if the build quality actually justifies the jump. I just want something that has a built-in Arca Swiss plate on the bottom because switching from my gimbal to my tripod is such a chore right now with this current mess. Does anyone have a setup they actually love for handheld work where they dont feel like they are fighting the camera? What are you guys using that doesnt block the buttons or the flip screen...

Unfortunately, generic gear is not as good as expected. I had issues with my first cage too. Try the SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II 4022 for better safety.

Like someone mentioned, stick to reputable brands for safety. The Tilta Full Camera Cage for Panasonic S5 II/S5 IIX Black is very precise.

  • Integrated Arca base
  • Dedicated HDMI clamp
