I finally picked up the Panasonic Lumix S5 and I'm absolutely loving the image quality, but I definitely need a cage to build out my rig. I’m mainly looking for something that provides solid protection without blocking access to the battery door or the top dials. I've been looking at the SmallRig and Tilta options, but I'm curious if anyone has tried the 8Sinn cage? I plan on mounting a T5 SSD and a top handle for low-angle shots. Since I do a lot of handheld work, weight is a bit of a concern for me. Which cage do you think offers the best balance of durability and ergonomics for the S5?
I went through this last year when I was trying to rig up my S5 on a budget... the struggle is real! I seriously considered the 8Sinn but the price tag was highkey intimidating. 1. 8Sinn Panasonic LUMIX S5 Cage vs SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 2983:
- Pros: 8Sinn has incredible ergonomics; the SmallRig already mentioned is way more accessible.
- Cons: 8Sinn is $159, basically double the price of others.
2. Niceyrig Camera Cage for Panasonic S5:
- Pros: Only $48 and fits perfectly.
- Cons: Kinda heavier than SmallRig stuff.
3. SmallRig Black Mamba Series Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 3440:
- Pros: This is the one I eventually grabbed on sale for $75. Super lightweight for handheld work. Best choice imo is the SmallRig Black Mamba Series Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 3440 if you care about weight, otherwise the Niceyrig saves u serious cash!!
> Which cage do you think offers the best balance of durability and ergonomics for the S5? Similar situation here... I actually went with the Kondor Blue Panasonic LUMIX S5 Cage cuz safety is huge for me and it honestly feels totally solid for handheld work!

In my experience, I’ve tried many rigs, and the SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 2983 is basically the sweet spot for weight. Tilta is cool, but SmallRig is lighter for handheld stuff, ngl. For that T5, just grab the SmallRig Mount for Samsung T5 SSD 2245B. Honestly, the SmallRig ergonomics are way better for reaching those top dials and keeping the rig compact. It's a solid choice for the S5... gl!
