Which external flash triggers work best with Panasonic S series cameras?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the jump to the Panasonic S5II and I’m absolutely loving the image quality and autofocus, but I’m hitting a bit of a wall when it comes to my lighting setup. I previously shot with Sony, so I have a bunch of gear that doesn't quite communicate correctly with the L-mount system. I’m looking for a reliable external flash trigger that fully supports the Panasonic protocol, specifically for off-camera portrait work.

I’ve been looking closely at the Godox XProII-O and the X3, but I’ve heard conflicting reports about how consistently the TTL and High-Speed Sync (HSS) actually perform with the S series bodies. Reliability is a huge priority for me since I do a mix of studio work and fast-paced events where I can't afford a misfire. I’ve also considered the Profoto Connect Pro, but that’s a significant price jump, so I’m wondering if the performance difference is truly noticeable on this specific camera system.

Does anyone here have hands-on experience with these triggers on an S1 or S5 series body? I’m especially curious about which system offers the most stable connection without those annoying "no-fire" glitches. What's your go-to trigger for your Panasonic setup, and are there any specific firmware settings I should look out for to get everything running smoothly?

Hmm, I've had a different experience. Respectfully, I'd suggest a different approach cuz Godox pins can be weirdly loose on the Panasonic LUMIX S5II shoe, leading to those misfires. For a safety-first setup, try the Westcott FJ-X3m Universal Wireless Flash Trigger. It’s literally more reliable for fast-paced events. TL;DR: Skip the Godox XPro; the Westcott FJ-X3m Universal Wireless Flash Trigger offers much better hot shoe contact and fewer "no-fire" glitches. 👍

In my experience, making the move to the Panasonic S series is awesome but yeah, the lighting situation is basically the one area where it gets kinda tricky. I've been shooting L-mount for a few years now, and I think the Godox system is ur best bet for general use, even if its not quite 100% perfect. I've used their newer pro-style trigger and the tiny touch-screen one on my S1, and they generally handle TTL and HSS pretty well. IIRC, there were some sync issues early on, but the latest firmware seems to have smoothed things out mostly. Not sure if the Profoto system is LITERALLY worth the massive price jump unless ur work is super high-stakes. For most events, the Godox stuff holds up fine. Just make sure ur settings are right... basically, keep the camera in "Fill Flash" mode so the protocol stays consistent. If you really need that absolute "no-fire" reliability, Profoto is the king, but honestly, Godox gets you 95% of the way there for way less cash. gl!

Building on the earlier suggestion, if you really need that 100% reliability for professional work, just bite the bullet and go with Profoto. I've been shooting for over a decade and tried basically everything under the sun, but nothing beats their ecosystem when you're on a high-stakes shoot.

  • The connection is rock solid. You wont find yourself wiggling the trigger on the S5II shoe like you might with cheaper brands.
  • Their interface is so much simpler. Less menu diving means you can actually focus on your subject.
  • The TTL to manual conversion is actually usable and reliable. It is definitely a price jump, but honestly... you get what you pay for. Just grab any of the current Profoto triggers that fit the Panasonic/Olympus TTL pin layout and you wont look back. Its worth the investment just to avoid that did it fire? anxiety.
