So I just got a Lumix S5 and I am super excited to take it to Chicago in three weeks for some street photos! I keep hearing about prime lenses being better for that blurry background look but I am so lost. If it doesn't zoom how do you even use it?? My logic was that a 35mm might be good but then I saw a 50mm and now I'm just confused. I only have like $500 or $600 to spend and I dont want a giant heavy lens that hurts my neck all day. Is there a specific one that's easy for a total beginner to use? Sorry if this is a dumb question I just have no idea what I'm doing yet...

Just catching up on this thread... honestly, just go for the Panasonic LUMIX S 35mm F1.8. I been really satisfied with it on my S5. Light. Easy. Cheap.
Honestly, I was disappointed by some third-party lenses I tried because the autofocus just wasnt reliable enough. You should probably stick with the Panasonic LUMIX S 50mm F1.8 for something safe and light. Unfortunately, it can feel a bit zoomed in on tight sidewalks, so the Panasonic LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is usually better for beginners even if it costs a bit more.
Honestly, I had issues with some lenses having terrible chromatic aberration, which was super disappointing for high-contrast street shots. It really messes with the technical quality. Before looking at specific focal lengths, are you planning to shoot mostly in bright daylight or do you need low-light capability for evenings? Also, do you prefer capturing wide environmental scenes or tight candid portraits of people?
