So I finally pulled the trigger on a Sigma fp L after staring at it for like a year because I wanted that weirdly beautiful color science and the tiny form factor. Ive been shooting on the Sony A7 series for years so I thought I knew what I was getting into but man this thing is basically just a sensor in a box lol. Its so tiny which is cool but also kind of a nightmare to hold for more than five minutes without some kind of grip or cage. Im taking it out to Seattle for a documentary project in three weeks and Im starting to realize the modular aspect means I actually have to buy everything separately just to make it functional for a full day of shooting. I already know I need a cage probably from SmallRig or Tilta to keep it from slipping out of my hands and I heard the battery life is pretty tragic so Im looking at dummy batteries or maybe just a huge stack of spares. Since I want to shoot 12-bit CinemaDNG to an external SSD what are the actual must-haves that dont make the camera feel like a giant heavy brick? I have about 500 or 600 bucks left in the gear budget for this month. What are the top essential accessories you guys use to make this thing actually usable in the field?
Congrats on snagging the fp L! Honestly it is an amazing piece of tech and those colors are just fantastic! I went through the exact same struggle when I first got mine because its basically a Lego set for adults lol. To keep your Seattle trip from being a headache without turning the camera into a heavy brick here is what I recommend based on my own field experience.
