So I just pulled the trigger on a Panasonic S5II for a wedding I'm shooting in Chicago next weekend - super tight timeline I know - but I'm basically stuck with a bag full of Canon EF glass and no clear answer on which adapter wont fail me during the ceremony. I spent all night looking at the Sigma MC-21 because my logic was that since Sigma is literally part of the L-mount alliance it should be the most native feeling option right?
But then I started digging into the forums and people are saying it doesnt support AF-C for video or even for fast bursts in stills mode which just seems crazy to me in 2024. Then I checked out the Metabones EF to L Smart Adapter and while the build looks solid some reviews mentioned it causing the camera to freeze up or the iris to flicker during shots.
I'm honestly panicking a bit because I cant afford to drop another 2k on native Lumix Pro glass right now and I need this to work. Is the MC-21 actually that limited or are people just being picky? My budget is pretty tapped out after the body purchase so I need the most reliable middle-ground option that wont hunt for focus when the bride is walking down the aisle...
Late to the thread but since youre on a budget and have a wedding next week you might look at the Commlite CM-EF-L High Speed Lens Adapter. Its way cheaper than Metabones and handles AF-C better than the MC-21 on the S5II because of the phase detect sensors. A few practical tips for the big day:
Stumbled upon this... regarding what #1 said, Id suggest being very careful. AF-C hunting kills ceremonies. Consider:
In my experience, the one I got was definitely as limited as the rumors say. I tried using it for a big gig and it was a total mess because it basically turned my nice glass into manual focus lenses.
@Reply #3 - good point! But honestly, I found the Fotodiox Pro Fusion EF to L-Mount Adapter much more stable. Unfortunately, that MC-21 is a total letdown for weddings. I had major issues with focus hunting and it just isnt as good as expected for moving subjects. Definitely dont trust it for the aisle walk... its just not reliable enough.
