What are the absolute best Sigma L-mount lenses for a wedding shoot? I am shooting a big wedding this July in a pretty dark barn up in Vermont and I am trying to finalize my kit for my Lumix S5II. I have about $2500 to spend and I want to stick with Sigma because honestly the Leica glass is way out of my price range and the Panasonic ones are great but I just love the Sigma look. I have been looking at the 24-70mm f2.8 Art and the 85mm f1.4 DG DN because everyone says those are the essentials for this kind of thing.
But then I see some reviews saying the older 24-70 has some dust issues or that the 35mm f1.2 is actually better for low light but it weighs a literal ton. Since I am gonna be on my feet for like ten hours I am worried about the weight of that 35mm 1.2 but the f1.4 might not be fast enough if the barn lighting is as bad as the bride says it is. Should I just get the 24-70 and call it a day or is it better to go with a two prime setup like a 35 and 85? I am really stuck on whether the zoom is worth the convenience or if the primes will save me in that low light...
Ngl late to the party but honestly skip the heavy stuff and grab the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary to save your back and your budget! It is seriously amazing for long days and way cheaper than the Art version. Then you can spend the extra cash on a fast prime for safety when it gets dark. Love this setup because it is just so reliable... you wont be nearly as tired!
^ This. Also, I am really satisfied with the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art for weddings.
TL;DR: Skip the first-gen 24-70 due to poor sealing and grab the newer Mark II or a prime set. Unfortunately, I had some real issues with the original Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. The dust sealing was honestly not as good as expected, and mine ended up with visible flakes inside after just a few months. It was a huge disappointment for professional gear. If you definitely want a zoom, you have to get the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art because they finally fixed those design flaws. For a dark barn in Vermont, f/2.8 might actually struggle without cranking your ISO to messy levels. I tried using the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art for a full day once and it was a mistake... way too heavy. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is much more sensible and the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is basically perfect for portraits. Use the primes if the lighting is gonna be that bad.
TL;DR: Go with primes like the Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG DN Art for low light safety over zooms. @Reply #2 - good point! But honestly i disagree on the zoom for a barn. You really need that extra light to stay safe... the Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG DN Art is amazing for wide shots and the autofocus is fantastic! Its way more reliable when the lights go down and lighter than carrying a massive zoom for ten hours.
