Best compact 50mm lens options for Leica M-mount bodies?

Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with a Leica M10 for a few months now, and while I love the output, I’m finding my current 50mm setup a bit too front-heavy for everyday carry. I’m really trying to lean into the 'compact' philosophy of the M-system and want a 50mm lens that keeps the profile as slim as possible for street photography and travel.

I’ve been eyeing the classic Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M (the collapsible one) because it looks incredibly portable, but I’m a bit hesitant about the workflow of collapsing it constantly. I also noticed the Voigtländer 50mm f/2.5 Color-Skopar is tiny, but I haven't seen much about how it performs on modern digital sensors. I’m not obsessed with having a super-fast f/1.4 aperture; I’d much rather have a lens that fits in a jacket pocket and has a nice tactile focus tab.

Does anyone have experience with these, or perhaps a hidden gem like a vintage LTM lens with an adapter? I’m looking for that perfect balance of sharpness and character without the bulk of a Summilux. For those who prioritize a lightweight kit, what is your favorite 'pancake' or ultra-compact 50mm for the M-mount?

Adding my two cents because I went through this last year. I've been shooting for years, but I'm actually pretty new to the "compact" 50mm rabbit hole. I spent months obsessing over weight because the whole M philosophy is about being lowkey, right? Honestly, I found the collapsible stuff like the Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M a bit of a pain to use in a hurry, so I looked at vintage LTM glass with an adapter to save some cash.

Basically, I tried these budget gems:
- Canon 50mm f/1.8 LTM - You can find these for maybe $150. It's tiny and has great character, but watch out for haze in the glass.
- Voigtländer 50mm f/2.5 Color-Skopar - I grabbed a used one for about $400. It's basically a pancake lens and ur M10 will balance perfectly.

I guess I realized you dont need to spend thousands for great results. just make sure to check the focus coupling if you go vintage... it might save you a headache. gl!

I'd go with the Voigtlander Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.5 LTM. Pro tip: check "Reid Reviews" for technical deep-dives on how these perform on digital sensors.

1. Voigtlander Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.5 LTM: Superior contrast and sharpness for digital. Total sleeper lens.
2. TTArtisan 50mm f/2 Full Frame Lens for Leica M: Literal $60 pancake. Tiny, but technically weaker than the CV.

The CV 50/2.5 fits the M-system philosophy perfectly without the Leica price tag. gl!

tbh Leica 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M is portable but slow. Voigtländer 50mm f/2.5 Color-Skopar is easier. TTArtisan 50mm f/2 is cheap. maybe consider the Skopar... ur M10 will feel lowkey perfect!
