I finally treated myself to a 35mm Summilux FLE, but I’m a bit paranoid about keeping that front element pristine. I’m looking for a high-quality UV or protector filter that won't compromise the lens's famous micro-contrast or introduce ghosting. I’ve been looking at the B+W 010 UV Master series versus the official Leica filters—is the price jump for the Leica brand actually worth it? Also, I find the stock hood a bit chunky for street shooting. Does anyone have experience with slim, vented metal hoods that offer solid protection without blocking the viewfinder too much? What specific filter and hood combo are you using to stay protected while keeping the setup compact?
yo, check out the Marumi 46mm EXUS Lens Protect if you want serious safety without the Leica price tag. it's basically half the price of B+W but the coating is crazy easy to clean. also, i'm super happy with the Light Lens Lab E46 12504 Vented Metal Hood for street shooting. it’s way more compact than stock and actually keeps the glass safe from bumps. cheers!
Sooo I actually bought the official Leica E46 UVa II Filter first and honestly? Total waste. I had issues with ghosting that I never get with the B+W 46mm 010 UV-Haze Master Filter, which is like half the price. Also, the Haoge LH-M36B Square Metal Lens Hood is way better than stock for street shooting cuz it doesnt block the finder as much. Basically, dont pay the Leica tax... it wont make ur photos better lol
Helpful thread 👍
Curious about one thing: are you using the original FLE or the newer close-focus model? It kinda affects hood compatibility. Some technical alternatives:
1. Hoya HD3 UV Filter 46mm - High-key tougher glass than B+W for impacts.
2. Heliopan 46mm SH-PMC UV Filter - Slim brass mount, very low flare.
3. IDS Works 35mm Summilux Hood - Much sleeker than the stock "barn door" style. Leica filters are mostly rebranded glass anyway, right? Not worth the markup imo.
