I’ve recently moved to a high-resolution digital body, and while I love the clinical perfection of modern glass, I’m really craving that classic Leica character. However, new M-mount lenses are getting incredibly expensive. I’m looking for vintage gems—like older Summicrons or Elmarits—that can actually keep up with a 40MP+ sensor without falling apart. I’ve been considering the 50mm Summicron V3 or an older 35mm Summaron, but I’m worried about issues like corner smearing or heavy purple fringing on digital. I want that beautiful 'glow' without sacrificing too much center sharpness. Which specific vintage Leica lenses do you think offer the absolute best performance-to-price ratio for modern sensors today?
yo, quick reply while i have a sec. honestly, jumping to high-res is a double-edged sword for vintage glass. basically, the sensor is gonna reveal every tiny flaw, so you really want something with high micro-contrast even if it has that "glow" wide open. if the lens is too soft, it just looks *broken* on a 40mp+ file rather than "classic." In my experience, you have to balance the spherical aberrations (the glow) with actual resolving power. Here's what i recommend for the best value: * Leica 50mm Summicron-M f/2 v3: I think this is the absolute sweet spot. It's often cheaper than the v4 or the "Rigid" v2, but it actually has slightly better contrast for digital sensors. It's sharp enough in the center to satisfy a high-res body, but still has that lovely vintage character. * Leica 35mm Summaron-M f/2.8: seriously, this lens is a gem. it's way sharper than people realize, often beating the early Summicrons in technical tests. i mean, you lose a stop of light, but the rendering is just gorgeous on digital and corner smearing is pretty minimal compared to older luxes.
* Leica 90mm Elmarit-M f/2.8 (Thin): if you ever want a longer focal length, these are highkey bargains and hold up incredibly well on modern sensors. be careful tho... make sure to check for "leica haze" inside the elements. on digital, that haze kills your dynamic range immediately and makes everything look muddy rather than glowing. anyway, i'd say go for a clean v3 cron if you want the best performance-to-price ratio. gl!
Spent ages trying to find that sweet spot when I first moved to high-res digital. Ngl, there was a phase where I bought almost every affordable v2 and v3 lens I could find just to see what would actually stick on the sensor. Eventually, the Leica 50mm Elmar-M f2.8 from the 1990s became my go-to. It is technically a later optical formula, but it still captures that vintage soul without the messy corners you get on the really old glass. Usually stays pretty crisp even stopped down a bit. Another one that really surprised me was the Leica 28mm Elmarit-M f2.8 v3. It is a bit of a chunky lens compared to the modern ones, but the drawing is beautiful on a 40MP sensor. It has enough bite in the center to look sharp, but the way it renders colors feels much more organic than the clinical look of the ASPH versions. Just be careful with flare on that one tho, as the coatings arent as robust as what we have now. It took a few months of trial and error to realize that micro-contrast matters way more than raw resolution for these newer bodies.
Sooo I totally get where your coming from!! Ngl, when I first switched to my current high-res setup, I was super worried about my older glass "falling apart" on the sensor too. Basically, I started with a really old lens I found at a estate sale, and honestly, the "glow" was more like a smudge at first lol. I'm still kinda new to the Leica world, but my experience taught me that center sharpness is usually fine, but the corners on my current setup can get pretty soft if I'm not careful. I guess the biggest lesson I learned is to watch out for internal haze or dust... it shows up sooo much more on a 40MP sensor than it did on my old film stuff. Definitely suggests getting anything vintage checked by a pro before you commit cuz your sensor won't hide anything. It's a decent option to go vintage, but safety first imo! gl!
Same setup here, love it
Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
