I recently treated myself to a Leica M11 for street photography, and while the image quality is stunning, I’m still figuring out the best ergonomic setup. Since the body is quite slim, I’m worried about my grip during long walks. I'm currently considering adding a thumb support and definitely a spare battery, as that 60MP sensor seems to drain power faster than I expected. I’m also torn between a discrete wrist strap or a classic neck strap for quick access. For those who shoot street with the M11, which specific accessories have actually made a difference in your day-to-day shooting experience and comfort?
Been there! I've used Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX for Leica M11 vs the Leica version for years. It's a decent option, way cheaper and deeper. Lesson: ur comfort shouldn't cost a fortune. 👍
So basically the consensus is that a thumb grip and extra juice are totally essential for the M11. Everyone here has given some solid advice on the ergonomics side, especially about adding that extra leverage for ur thumb like the Leica or Match Technical options mentioned earlier. But honestly, from a safety-first perspective, I wanna talk about keeping that investment secure cuz street photography can get a bit chaotic sometimes and that slim body is definitely slippery.
I've been using my setup for a few months now and I'm super happy with how it's held up. If you're worried about grip safety, you've basically got three paths to compare. Option A is a dedicated metal grip like the Kamerakraft LM11 Camera Grip vs the official Leica one. The Kamerakraft is awesome because it has a built-in Arca-Swiss plate and a really deep handle that makes it almost impossible to drop, even with sweaty hands. Option B is a heavy-duty strap like the Rock n Roll Riviera Leather Neck Strap which is super thick and sturdy compared to thin silk cords. Personally, I think a neck strap is safer for long walks because if you get bumped in a crowd, the camera isn't going anywhere. Option C, which people always forget, is the Leica M11 Glass Screen Protector 18678. Ngl, I would've scratched my screen ten times over by now without it while walking around.
So yeah, TL;DR: Definitely grab the extra Leica BP-SCL7 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1800mAh) as suggested in the first reply, but prioritize a real grip if ur truly worried about drops. It makes the body feel way more substantial and safe. Gl with the new rig! 👍
Yo! Compare the Oberwerth Half Case Leica M11 vs a metal grip—the case adds depth without being too heavy, i guess. For straps, the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap vs a silk cord like the Artisan & Artist ACAM-301N is the real trade-off between speed and comfort. Definately go with the half case and the Cuff; it’s probably the best combo for keeping things discrete!!
In my experience, M11 ergonomics can be problematic during long walks. You could try a full grip, but I recommend the Leica Thumb Support M11 Black to improve ur leverage. Youll also definitely need a spare Leica BP-SCL7 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1800mAh) because that 60MP sensor draws significant current... honestly, the thumb support is lowkey the best way to stay discrete, gl
Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in as someone who has been through plenty of M bodies over the years. You really dont need to go broke on accessories just because the camera was pricey. For the thumb support, I have been using the Haoge THB-M11B Thumb Grip for a while now. It fits the hot shoe perfectly and provides that extra leverage you need for a fraction of the cost of the Leica version. For straps, skip the boutique brands and look at Gordys Camera Straps Horizontal Wrist Strap. They are rugged, minimal, and perfect for street work because they dont scream for attention. They actually look better once they get a bit of a patina too. Also, if you want to protect that screen without the Leica markup, the Expert Shield Glass Screen Protector for Leica M11 is basically the same quality for way less. Save that extra cash for your next trip or more glass... honestly, the simpler the setup, the better you will shoot.
