I just finally picked up a 35mm Summicron-M ASPH, and honestly, I'm a bit nervous about scratching that front element. It’s such a beautiful piece of glass, and I want to keep it pristine, but I’m worried about how a filter might affect that classic Leica micro-contrast or introduce unwanted flare. I've been looking at the Leica UVa II filters, but I've also heard the B+W XS-Pro Nano is a solid alternative. Since it's an E39 thread, I need something slim that won't interfere with the clip-on hood. Do you guys think a protective filter is necessary, or should I just rely on the hood? Which specific brand and model do you trust to stay on your 35mm 'Cron?
Dude, congrats on the 35mm Summicron-M ASPH! Seriously, that lens is a dream. I totally get the anxiety though... I’ve been shooting Leica for like a decade and that first week with a new 'Cron is always nerve-wracking. Honestly, I've tried many setups and for your situation, I would suggest just biting the bullet and getting the Leica UVa II Filter E39. Is it overpriced? Probably. But in my experience, the fit and finish are literally perfect for the E39 threads, and it sits so flush that the clip-on hood—specifically the Leica 12526 Lens Hood—snaps on without any drama. I’ve tested the B+W 39mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 010M Filter too, which is a solid alternative and highkey just as good optically, but sometimes the knurling on B+W rings can be a tight fit with certain Leica clip-on hoods. If you're worried about micro-contrast, basically dont be. Unless youre shooting directly into a harsh sun, these modern multi-coated filters are SO good you wont notice a difference. I always keep a filter on because cleaning a filter is way less stressful than scrubbing the front element of a $3k lens. Plus, the hood is great for physical bumps, but it wont stop sea spray or sticky fingers lol. Just get the Leica one and enjoy the peace of mind... it's worth it for the stress reduction alone! What kind of body are you shooting it on??
Seconding the recommendation above. Ngl, I’ve had issues with cheap glass ruining shots before—it sucks!! If you want something besides the Leica or B+W ones: - Breakthrough Photography 39mm X4 UV Filter - Seriously thin and high light transmission.
- Hoya 39mm HD3 UV Filter - This one’s actually super durable if ur clumsy. Honestly, I still worry about flare but these dont seem to mess with the 'Cron magic too much. Just check the hood fit!!
Exactly what I was thinking
Did this last week, worked perfectly
man i am in the exact same boat. i have been looking at the Leica UVa II Filter E39 and comparing it to the Heliopan 39mm SH-PMC UV Filter for like two weeks now and i still cant make up my mind. it is honestly so frustrating because i really want that front element protected but i am terrified of losing that special leica rendering or dealing with extra flare. i keep reading forum posts but nobody seems to agree and it is driving me crazy... still havent bought anything yet because of it.
