Hi everyone! I finally took the plunge and joined the Leica family with a brand-new Q3. After months of debating, I finally have that 28mm Summilux in my hands, and I’m absolutely in love with the image quality. However, coming from a larger system with a deep handgrip, I’m finding the Q3 a bit nerve-wracking to hold securely, and I’m terrified of picking up a scratch on that beautiful fixed lens.
I’m looking for some advice on the best 'day-one' accessories to improve the handling and protect the glass. First off, let’s talk thumb grips. I’ve seen the official Leica version, but it’s quite an investment. Does it really offer a better fit and finish than the third-party options from brands like Match Technical or Haoge? My main concern is whether these grips obstruct the rear dial or interfere with the new tilt-screen mechanism, which I’ve been using a lot more than I expected. I want that extra stability for one-handed shooting without sacrificing access to the controls.
Secondly, I’m looking for recommendations on high-quality filters. With a 60MP sensor, I’m worried about putting mediocre glass in front of the lens and losing that legendary Leica micro-contrast. Should I just stick with the Leica-branded E49 UV filter for protection, or are brands like B+W (specifically the Master series) or Breakthrough Photography better options? Also, given that the Q3 shoots at f/1.7, I’ve already hit the limit of the electronic shutter in bright daylight. Do you find a 3-stop ND filter is essential for street photography, or is the high shutter speed usually enough?
I’m hoping to keep the budget for both under $350 if possible, but I’m willing to spend more for the right quality. I’d love to hear from long-term Q3 users—what are your absolute must-have accessories for protection and ergonomics that don’t ruin the camera's sleek profile?
Here's what I recommend to keep ur budget in check without sacrificing that 60MP sharpness: - Thumb Grip: Honestly, the official one is SO overpriced. I've had issues with cheap third-party fitment before, but the Haoge THB-Q3B Thumb Grip for Leica Q3 is actually great. It's solid metal and doesn't block the tilt-screen or the rear dial at all, which is basically what ur looking for. - UV Filter: Skip the Leica-branded glass... it's mostly marketing. I'd go with the B+W 49mm Master 010 UV MRC Nano Filter. It's top-tier glass and won't ruin ur micro-contrast like the cheaper options. - ND Filter: Even with 1/16000s, f/1.7 in noon sun is pushing it. A B+W 49mm Master 803 ND 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) is basically essential for street work if you want to stay wide open. Unfortunately, Leica gear is always a bit of a money pit, but these alternatives are way more practical. gl!
So basically the consensus is that third-party grips work, but honestly, I'd be kinda CAREFUL with the tilt screen clearance. You really dont wanna cause mechanical interference with that hinge... Before suggesting glass to avoid optical degradation, I've gotta ask: how often are you actually shooting in super dusty or wet environments where you'd need the 24/7 protection? Also, do you find yourself switching filters often or just leaving one on?
+1 to what was said earlier. Honestly, joining the Leica fam is literally the best feeling, I'm so excited for you!! I've been doing this for years but the Q3 still feels like magic... Quick question tho—how often are you actually hitting that 1/16000s electronic shutter limit in your daily shooting? Also, do you find urself using the tilt screen for every shot or just occasionally? That really changes which grip works best, you know?
