Hey everyone! I finally took the plunge and picked up a Leica Q3 last week after being on a waitlist for what felt like forever. It’s an absolute dream to shoot with, but I’m currently feeling that 'new gear anxiety.' Every time I set it down on a cafe table or a stone ledge for a shot, I’m terrified of scratching that beautiful bottom plate. It feels a bit too 'naked' right now, so I’m looking to invest in some high-quality leather protection and a more comfortable strap.
I’ve been browsing a few options, but I’m finding that the Q3’s new tilting screen adds a layer of complexity. I’ve seen some half-cases that seem to obstruct the screen's movement or don't quite account for the slightly different dimensions compared to the Q2. Ideally, I’m looking for a half-case that features a built-in battery and SD card access door. I really want to avoid the hassle of unscrewing the case every time I need to swap batteries or offload my files.
Regarding straps, I’m torn between a classic neck strap and a sturdy wrist strap. I do a lot of long-distance street photography, so ergonomics are a huge deal for me. I’ve looked at some of the bigger names like Arte di Mano and Oberwerth, which look stunning, but they are definitely a significant investment. On the other hand, I don’t want to put a cheap, scratchy strap on a camera of this caliber.
For those of you who have had the Q3 for a while now, what are you using to dress it up? Are there any smaller, artisan leather workers I should be looking at that offer a great balance of craftsmanship and functionality? I’m particularly interested in hearing how your cases hold up with the tilt screen and if you’ve found a strap that doesn't dig into your neck after four hours of walking. Looking forward to your recommendations!
Ok so, i totally get that 'new gear anxiety'—it's realy nerve-wracking setting such an expensive piece of glass on a concrete ledge!! I actually had a pretty bad experience with a high-end custom case that cost a fortune but basically blocked the screen from tilting properly... super frustrating.
Here's what I recommend based on what I finally settled on:
* For the case, definately check out the LIM'S Design Leica Q3 Half Case in Black Italio Pueblo Leather. It has a built-in aluminum base and a battery door, so you dont have to take it off every five minutes. Plus, it fits the Q3's bigger body way better than the generic ones I tried.
* Regarding straps, honestly, if you're walking for hours, those thin leather ones are gonna kill your neck. I use the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap SLL-BK-3 cuz it’s so easy to adjust on the fly, even though it’s not as 'classy' as an artisan leather one. If you want leather tho, Tap & Dye Legacy Leather Camera Strap is a solid choice that doesn't feel like sandpaper.
Anyway, gl with the new setup! Its such a dream to shoot with once you stop worrying about scratches.
Coming back to this, for total peace of mind, I'd suggest the Rock n Roll Straps Leica Q3 Classic Half Case because it's built like a tank and saved my baseplate once on a marble ledge. Pair it with the Rock n Roll Straps Snake Neck Strap—it's super thick and distributes weight way better than anything else I've tried over the years. Safety first, right?
Here's what I recommend: if you're worried about that bottom plate but dont want to drop $500, check out the Lim's Design Leica Q3 Half Case with Dovetail Plate. Honestly, it's the safest bet for the screen. The integrated aluminum base adds serious protection against stone ledges, and the battery door access is totally flush. Most importantly, it’s cut specifically so the tilt screen won't snag—a common issue with generic cases that havent updated their patterns from the Q2 yet.
For straps, if ur doing 4-hour walks, ergonomics are everything. I'd suggest a wider, flat strap like the Rock n Roll M-System Leather Strap. It distributes weight across your neck much better than thin cord straps. Just make sure you use plastic lug protectors so you dont scratch the camera's finish. Better safe than sorry! Anyway, hope that helps protect your investment. Cheers.
Same boat, watching this
Congrats on the Q3! Honestly, that 'new gear anxiety' is sooooo real. I'm kinda a DIY enthusiast because I hate how bulky some high-end cases make the camera, especially when you're trying to use that tilt screen. Here is a slightly different way to handle it that focuses more on practical protection: - **Skin the bottom plate:** Before even picking a case, I’d suggest looking at AlphaGvrd Camera Skins. I put a matte black skin just on the bottom plate of my gear. It basically makes the metal scratch-proof from the get-go, so if you do set it on a stone ledge, you're scratching a piece of vinyl, not your Leica. It’s a cheap DIY way to kill that anxiety instantly.
- **Minimalist Protection:** If you want leather without the bulk, check out Kaza Deluxe Leather Half Case. Their Q3 version is designed specifically for the screen clearance and is much more affordable than the big artisan brands while still feeling 'premium.'
- **Ergonomics over Aesthetics:** For long walks, I’ve found that thick leather actually digs in more. I switched to a Hyper-Utility Climbing Rope Strap. It’s kinda industrial-looking but the round profile is way easier on the neck after four hours than a flat leather strap that doesn't breathe. Tbh, once you skin the bottom, you might find you don't even need a heavy case!
