So I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the M11 last week after shooting with an M10-P for the better part of four years and man the lack of a bottom plate is seriously messing with my head. I am so used to that tactile feeling of the baseplate but now that it is gone I am terrified of scratching the bottom of the camera every time I set it down on a stone wall or something while I am out shooting. I have got a big trip coming up to the Amalfi Coast in like ten days and I am honestly panicking because I realized none of my old half-cases fit right. I tried forcing my old leather protector on it but the alignment for the battery release is totally off and it blocks the USB-C port which I actually want to use for charging on the go this time around.
I really need some solid recommendations for a high-end leather half-case that actually accounts for the M11 design and the specific battery setup. I am looking for something that has a flap or an opening on the bottom so I can swap batteries or plug in a cable without unscrewing the whole thing every single time. I looked at the official Leica one but it feels a bit generic for the price? I have heard people mention Arte di Mano but the lead times look insane and I do not think I can get one before I fly out of the country. Are there any other brands that have stock ready to ship that feel just as premium? I am willing to spend up to $450 or so for a really nice setup if it means it will last me years and actually protect the finish.
Also I am desperate for a new strap. I have been using a thin cord strap but the M11 feels a tiny bit heavier or maybe it is just me being paranoid but it is digging into my shoulder after just an hour of walking around the city. I need something wider but still leather and supple. Not those stiff ones that take a year to break in and feel like cardboard. Does anyone have experience with the Rock n Roll straps or maybe something from Vi Vante? I just need to know what actually works for long days of street shooting without making me regret my life choices. What are you guys actually using on your M11s right now?
Honestly, I totally get the phantom baseplate syndrome. It took me a solid month to stop reaching for the latch when swapping batteries on my M11. Since you are on a tight timeline for the Amalfi trip, forget Arte di Mano... they are amazing but you will be back home before it even ships. The Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11 Classic with Hidden Battery Access is basically the gold standard if you want that premium feel with actual functionality. Its bottom flap is magnetic and gives you full access to the battery and the USB-C port for those mid-day charges. It is pricey, usually around $380, but the leather quality is miles ahead of the official Leica one. It adds a tiny bit of bulk, but that is the trade-off for not scratching the bottom on those Italian stone walls. Regarding the shoulder pain, those thin cords are a nightmare for long days of street shooting. The Rock n Roll Straps M-Line Rock n Roll Leather Strap Black is a total game changer for the M11.
^ This. Also, dont bother with the official Leica protector... i was super disappointed by the leather quality. It feels kinda thin and cheap tbh. If you want a perfect fit with the battery door, look into the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11. I had issues with other brands blocking the cable port but this one is solid. For the Amalfi trip, the Hawkesmill Leather Camera Strap Borough is way more comfortable than those thin cords...
I've spent years testing these and the Lim's Design Leather Half Case for Leica M11 is a sleeper hit. It uses a 6061 aluminum base so you get that rigid baseplate feel back, plus a magnetic door for the battery. For the strap, try the Artisan & Artist ACAM-280 Leather Strap.
Regarding what #3 said about the official protector being thin, I actually disagree a bit because that slim profile is exactly what prevents the battery lever from snagging! I had a terrifying experience where a thicker, softer case jammed the release mechanism because the leather shifted in the heat. It was a nightmare trying to get the battery out without scratching the finish... i was honestly panicking lol. I learned that structural rigidity and precise tolerances are everything for the M11. My current setup uses a rigid metal sub-frame inside the leather because it guarantees the USB-C port stays centered no matter how much I am moving. I also moved away from super soft straps after one started fraying at the lug connection during a trek. Now I prioritize high-tensile stitching and load-bearing specs over that immediate broken-in feel. Reliability beats aesthetics every single time when you are dangling five figures off your neck! Honestly, the peace of mind is amazing.
