I’m looking for a solid thumb grip for my Leica M10 (and possibly an M11 later) to get a bit more purchase without turning the camera into a brick. I mostly shoot one-handed street and I’ve noticed my right thumb slips a bit during longer walks, especially with a slightly heavier lens. Ideally I want something that doesn’t block the hot shoe too much, doesn’t interfere with the shutter speed dial, and won’t scratch the top plate over time. Also curious if the “soft release” style grips are actually more comfortable. What are your top thumb grip picks for M10/M11 bodies, and why?
Ok so thumb grips on M10/M11 are basically just leverage + friction, but the fit matters a lot cuz the hot shoe tolerances are tight. That’s why scratching happens.
For your situation, I’ve had the best luck with Leica M10/M11 Thumb Support (24022). Yeah it’s pricey (like $200-ish), but the machining is clean, it doesn’t mess with the shutter dial on my M10, and it feels “OEM” so it doesn’t wiggle.
More budget: Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX (Leica M10/M11). Super comfy for one-hand street, but it sticks up a bit more, and you’ll wanna add a tiny strip of protective tape under the rails to avoid marks.
Soft release grips… ngl I think they’re more about button feel than thumb comfort. cheers
Ok so same issue on my M10 doing one-handed walks… i got paranoid about scratching too. I ended up trying:
- Leica M10/M11 Handgrip 24018 — bigger hold, no hot shoe wear, but yeah it adds bulk.
- Leica Leather Half Case for M10 18806 (or similar) — weirdly helped my thumb slip cuz the back edge is grippier.
Soft-release stuff didnt help me much tbh. Biggest “safety” win was avoiding hot-shoe wobble entirely.
- **What’s causing the slip (and scratches):** i think most of the “my thumb slides” issue is less the grip brand and more the *shape + shoe fit*. If the thumb rest rocks even a tiny bit in the hot shoe, it’ll slowly scuff the top plate. Been there… mood.
- **Budget/value pick I’ve been happy with:** Haoge makes a few hot-shoe thumb rests that are cheap enough you can try one without crying. The finish isn’t as fancy as Leica stuff, but honestly I’ve been satisfied. Tip: put a thin strip of gaffer tape (or those clear vinyl/camera skin scraps) on the underside where it contacts the shoe rails. Looks dumb, works GREAT, and keeps grit from grinding paint.
- **Another solid mid-tier option:** 7artisans (and similar) do a slightly bigger “shelf” style that gives more surface area, which helps one-handed walks with heavier glass. I *think* those tend to block the shoe less than the super hooky ones, but depends on the exact shape.
- **Soft-release style comfort?** idk but… IIRC the “soft release” button is more about finger feel than thumb comfort. It can be nicer, but it won’t fix the thumb slip by itself.
- **Practical check:** make sure it doesn’t bump the shutter dial at all when you twist it—some do on the M10/M11.
good luck, hope you find one that doesn’t turn the M into a brick lol
Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in as someone who has tried basically every attachment under the sun for the M10 over the last few years. One thing to think about long-term isn't just the grip itself, but how much it snags on your camera bag. I've found that some of the more aggressive hooks are a total pain to pull out of a tight bag quickly when you see a shot.
Story time: I went through this last year on my M10 doing one-handed street walks, same thumb-slip mood. I tried a couple and ended up keeping Kamera Kraft LM Grip (Leica M10/M11) on most days cuz the contact patch is bigger + the angle is less “hooky”, so it felt stable without me death-gripping. The big lesson was scratch prevention: any thumb grip that’s a hair loose in the hot shoe will micro-wiggle and kinda sand the top plate over time… so I started putting a tiny strip of gaffer tape on the underside and it stopped the rub. Also, soft-release style? imo it’s more about trigger feel than grip comfort, but it did make longer walks less fatiguing for me!!! cheers
Honestly, I’m not 100% sure if this is a popular opinion, but I kind of disagree that a metal accessory is always the best way to go for better purchase. I’ve always felt like those thumb rests, even the high-end ones, change the balance in a way that’s a bit weird for one-handed shooting. I think I heard once about people using small, *custom-cut* pieces of textured rubber or heavy-duty grip tape right on the body where the thumb naturally lands. Pretty sure it’s basically a DIY version of what some sports photographers do to their gear. I tried a little patch of some anti-slip material I found—not sure what it was called exactly—and it actually worked pretty well without the bulk. It keeps the hot shoe totally free for a flash or a finder too, which is what I was mostly worried about. It sounds a bit DIY and maybe a little risky for the finish if you use the wrong adhesive, but if you’re careful, it might be the low-profile fix you’re looking for.
