Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Leica M11 in the black finish last week. It’s an incredible piece of machinery, but I’ve got to admit, I’m a little paranoid about that first inevitable scratch on the bottom plate. Since the M11 has moved away from the traditional removable baseplate we saw on the M10 and earlier models, I’m looking for a high-quality leather half-case that offers solid protection without sacrificing the camera's sleek ergonomics.
I’ve been doing some digging, but there are so many options out there that it’s getting a bit overwhelming. I’m specifically looking for something that provides a bit of extra grip, as the M11 body feels a little slim in my hands during longer shooting sessions. However, the most important feature for me is accessibility. I really want a case that has a dedicated cutout or a flap for the battery and SD card slot. I don’t want to have to unscrew the entire case every single time I need to swap a battery or offload my files—that just seems like it would defeat the purpose of the M11's new design.
I’ve looked at the official Leica protector, but it feels a bit basic for the price. I’ve also seen some beautiful work from Arte di Mano and Luigi (LeicaTime), but those are quite an investment and I’m wondering if they are worth the premium. On the other end, there are brands like Oberwerth and even some more affordable options on Etsy, but I’m worried about the leather quality and whether they might eventually stretch out and lose their snug fit.
For those of you who have been using an M11 for a while, which half-case have you found to be the most practical? Does the case you're using interfere with the rear touchscreen or the thumb dial at all? I’m willing to spend around $200-$300 for something that will last as long as the camera itself.
What are the best leather half-cases for the M11 in terms of balancing aesthetics, protection, and battery access?
For your situation, I’d suggest the Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11 with Battery Access because the M11’s new design really requires a precision hinged door for the battery lever. I’m super satisfied with mine; the vegetable-tanned leather adds perfect grip and it works well without blocking the thumb dial. It’s way better than the Leica M11 Protector and wont stretch out over time. gl!
sooo i actually just got into the M system too and was LITERALLY shaking when i first took my m11 out of the box lol. i was so scared of scratching that bottom plate cuz the finish is so nice right? i spent like three days straight looking at technical specs and leather tanning types because i'm a total nerd for details even though i'm still kinda learning the ropes with the camera itself... i wanted something that wouldnt fall off or feel loose over time! basically i found that you dont have to spend $500 for safety!! i found a great resource on eBay for the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11 and it is honestly such a steal at around $75. i was worried the leather would stretch but it's held up great... pro tip, check these out for that balance of price and protection:
* TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11: has a solid metal base for impact safety and a magnetic battery flap that doesn't wiggle.
* Shoten Genuine Leather Half Case for Leica M11: usually around $120, has a built-in grip which is AMAZING for longer shooting sessions. i think the Shoten is probably the best bet if ur hands feel cramped because the leather is molded perfectly around the thumb dial without blocking anything. lesson learned for me was that the 'budget' brands sometimes have more precise mechanical hinges than the super expensive boutique ones. gl with the m11, its such a beast!! peace 👍
Before I give advice, are you using the Leica Visoflex 2? Some cases have high shoulders that block the EVF tilt. Honestly, the Lim's Design Italian Leather Half Case for Leica M11 is highkey a great budget-friendly pick with a metal battery door that works perfectly and feels way more premium than the price suggests. lmk!

Seconding the recommendation above. That hinged door is key for the M11. Technically, Arte di Mano offers a better fit vs some Etsy options that can be too thick and block the thumb dial. Oberwerth has decent battery access tho. Honestly, if you want it to last as long as the camera, go with premium brands. Dont go cheap on a $9k body cuz the leather will eventually stretch out... gl!
