Im looking for the best leather half-case for my M11 because I really dont want to scratch the bottom plate up like I did with my old M240. I just picked up the silver chrome version last week and honestly every time I set it down on a cafe table I wince a little bit. I know Leica users are split on cases but for me it's about grip too.
Im torn between a few options right now and could really use some help deciding which way to go. First is the Arte di Mano half case but man that price tag is steep and I heard the shipping from Korea takes forever. I have a trip to Kyoto coming up in three weeks and I really want it by then so I can walk around all day without worrying.
The other one I'm looking at is the Oberwerth case specifically the one with the flap for the battery. It looks super practical but I've heard some people say it adds too much bulk to the bottom of the camera and makes it feel chunky. Then there's the official Leica one which is cheaper and easier to find but the leather just doesnt look as nice as the artisanal stuff.
Constraints wise I'm trying to stay under $400 if possible. I really need:
Is the Arte di Mano worth the extra 200 bucks and the wait or should I just go with Oberwerth? I saw some people mentioning Rock n Roll straps too but I'm mainly focused on the case right now. My hands are medium sized if that matters for the grip part. Just want something that feels like it belongs on a five figure camera and wont fall apart after a year of street shooting...
Saw your post earlier and wanted to chime in before you drop massive cash on the Korean stuff. Honestly the Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11 with Battery Access is a decent option for the Kyoto trip. It keeps the USB-C port open which is huge if you dont wanna pull the battery every night to charge. The leather is thick and feels premium enough for an M11 but yeah it adds a bit of height to the base. Arte di Mano is beautiful but for a high-intensity street photography trip you might want something more rugged. If you want something slimmer that still has a decent grip look at the Vi Vante Leather Half Case for Leica M11. Its way under your $400 budget and usually ships pretty fast. Another solid pick is the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11 if you want to save money for lenses... it has the battery door and the USB access too. Just check the shipping times since you are on a deadline. Feel free to ask if you want more details on the leather textures.
Regarding what #1 said about the Oberwerth being a decent option, i've used them and they're solid, but they do add some serious chunkiness to the bottom. If youre worried about bulk but still want that artisan vibe for your Kyoto trip, look into the Angelo Pelle Half Case for Leica M11. I picked one up for my M10-R a while back and the leather quality is insane, smells like a workshop in Florence. It has a built-in grip which helps a ton with the M11 balance. Honestly, that silver chrome is way too pretty to leave unprotected on a cafe table. Another sleeper pick that usually ships fast is the Lim's Design Genuine Leather Half Case for Leica M11 with Aluminum Base. I know it sounds less boutique than the Arte di Mano stuff, but it has a solid metal bottom plate that is basically indestructible. It has the battery door and doesnt block the USB-C at all. I used one for a month of street shooting in Japan last year and it handled the humidity perfectly. The grip is actually more ergonomic than the official Leica one tbh. In my experience, you should never settle for a case without the battery cutout. I used a custom case years ago that required unscrewing the whole thing just to swap cards... missed a shot of a lifetime in Paris because I was fumbling with a thumb screw. With the M11 you really want that easy access for the USB-C charging too. Both the Angelo Pelle and Lim's should get to you way faster than anything from Korea right now.
Like someone mentioned, the extra bulk from those bottom flap designs can really kill the ergonomics. Honestly, i have had some issues with the reliability of those cases anyway... the hinges or snaps usually get loose after a few months of heavy street shooting. It is super disappointing when you pay a premium and the fit just isnt perfect or starts sagging. Since youre worried about your silver chrome, just be careful with the inner linings on some of these. I had a case once that actually stained the finish when it got a bit damp, which was a total nightmare. Given your Kyoto trip is so close, id probably prioritize whatever you can get delivered fast rather than risking a custom order that might not show up or fit right. Better to be safe than sorry with a new camera.
