I just upgraded to the Leica M11, and while the build quality is incredible, I'm finding it a bit slippery during long street sessions. I want to keep the setup minimalist, but I definitely need something to improve the handling before I have a heart attack thinking I'll drop it! I’ve looked at the official Leica handgrip, but it’s quite pricey. Are there better third-party options that still allow easy battery access? Also, for straps, I’m torn between a classic leather neck strap or a quick-release system like Peak Design. What are you all using to balance security with that classic M-system aesthetic? I'd love to hear your favorite combos!

Late to the party but I totally feel u on that "bar of soap" feeling... it's highkey terrifying with a body that expensive!! I've spent way too much time testing these, and tbh, the best technical solution is the IDS Works Leica M11 Modular Grip. It's basically a masterpiece of engineering because it's modular, so you can pick a handle size that actually fits your hand, plus it includes a built-in Arca-Swiss plate for tripods. And yeah, it leaves the battery and SD slot completely open so no fiddling around mid-shoot. For the strap situation, i think you should look at these:
- Artisan & Artist ACAM-301N Silk Cord Strap: Super minimalist, incredibly strong, and fits the M-aesthetic perfectly.
- Rock n Roll M-System Leather Strap: This is the move if you want a hand-crafted leather look that actually feels secure during long street sessions. In my experience, pairing a leather strap with a technical grip is the way to go. It balances that vintage vibe with modern handling. Just make sure whatever grip you get has the specific cutout for the M11's unique battery release lever... some older 'universal' ones definitely dont work right. Anyway, hope that helps!! gl with the new rig.

For your situation, I totally get the anxiety... dropping an M11 is literally my recurring nightmare. Honestly, I've had issues with some cheap third-party grips where the tolerance is off and it feels wobbly—super sketchy when ur relying on it for a one-handed shot. I actually sent one back because the battery door access was so tight it scratched my thumb. Comparing the grip options:
- Kamerakraft LM11 Camera Grip: Pros are the insane build quality and hidden tool kit. It allows perfect battery and SD access without removal. Cons: it's still pricey (around $280).
- Official Leica Grip: Pros are the brand match; cons are the price and it feels a bit "plasticky" for the cost.
- 7artisans Handgrip for Leica M11: Pros are the price (around $60); cons are it feels a bit hollow and not as "grippy" as the others. For straps, it's the Rock n Roll M-System Leather Strap (classic/secure) vs the COOPH Leica Rope Strap 126cm (modern/indestructible). Leather looks great but I've had issues with it being slippery on my shoulder during long walks. The COOPH rope is climbing-grade and basically impossible to snap. Best choice? Tbh, if safety is ur #1 priority, go with the Kamerakraft grip and the COOPH rope. It’s the "security" setup that won't fail u. It’s kinda disappointing how much these cost after dropping $9k on the body, but yeah... definitely cheaper than a repair bill from Wetzlar lol. anyway, hope that helps!

Quick reply while I have a sec! If you want rock-solid handling without the extra bulk of a bottom grip, you seriously need to look at a thumb support. It changes the leverage entirely! Im obsessed with the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX2 for Leica M11. It locks into the hot shoe and gives your thumb a perfect resting spot, which basically eliminates that soap bar feeling instantly without making the camera taller. Here is why this combo is amazing:

  • The Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX2 is carved from solid brass so it feels like a native part of the body, not some cheap add-on.
  • It gives you way more control over the shutter speed dial with your thumb while maintaining a death grip on the body.
  • For security, check out the Rock n Roll Straps M-Body Classic Leather. Its hand-cut and the leather is thick enough to handle the M11 weight while looking super stealthy. Honestly, going with a thumb grip is the move if you want to keep the battery door completely unobstructed. You get that technical advantage without the clunkiness of a full baseplate. Let me know if you want more specs on the fitment!

Seconding the recommendation above! Unfortunately, I had issues with pricey leather being sooo slippery... honestly, just grab a cheap paracord strap, basically does the job for way less.

In my experience, you dont actually need to spend a fortune to keep that M11 safe lol. I totally get the heart attack feeling... that camera is basically a bar of soap! For the grip, I highkey recommend the Haoge HG-M11 Hand Grip for Leica M11. It is only around $55 and basically does exactly what the official one does but for a fraction of the cost. Plus it has that bottom cutout for battery and SD card access which is a MUST for the M11. For straps, its basically Aesthetic vs Function. I tried the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap L-AS-3 and it is super convenient, but it kinda ruins the classic vibe imo. If you want that leather look without spending $200, check out the Gordy's Camera Straps Adjustable Neck Strap. They are like $45 and look sooo good. Ngl, the Haoge grip + a simple leather strap is the best value combo you can get. gl!
