I just bought an M11 and honestly I'm terrified. I saved up for two years for this trip to Japan next month but now I'm reading about all these extra things online and I'm totally lost. Do I actually need a screen protector or is the glass strong enough? My logic was that for this much money it should come with everything but people keep mentioning thumb grips and soft releases and I dont even know what those do. Sorry if this is stupid but I'm worried I'll drop it or scratch the lens on day one. I have like $200 left in my budget for everything else. Should I get a bag first or a strap? The one in the box looks kinda cheap but maybe its fine...
TL;DR: Grab a thumb grip for stability and wait until you hit Tokyo to buy the rest! Honestly, youre gonna have an amazing time in Japan with that M11! Since you have $200, my top recommendation is a thumb grip. Its a total game changer for handling. I swear by the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX because it gives you so much more leverage when youre trying to nail focus. Without it, the camera basically feels like a wet bar of soap. For the soft release, check out the Match Technical Boop-O-S. It screws into the shutter button and lets you use the flat of your finger instead of the tip, which actually reduces camera shake on those slower shutter speeds. Pro tip: Since youre going to Shinjuku, go to Map Camera! Their used floor is fantastic and youll find incredible deals on straps like the Artisan and Artist ACAM-102 Cotton Strap for way cheaper than back home. Also, check out the Reid Reviews site for some deep technical dives on the M11 sensor performance!
In my experience, stick to high-spec protection:
Congrats on the M11. Its a beast but yeah, the ergonomics are basically a brick. With $200, you gotta prioritize.
