Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the jump into the Leica M-mount system with a used M10, but after the body purchase, my bank account is feeling a bit light. I’m looking to pick up a 35mm lens as my primary daily driver, but I’m struggling to decide which one actually offers the best 'bang for your buck' these days.
I know the Summicron is the gold standard, but I can’t quite justify the $3,000+ price tag right now. I’ve been looking closely at the Voigtländer 35mm f/2 Ultron Vintage Line and the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C-Biogon. Both seem to have great reputations for sharpness and character, but they are very different lenses in terms of speed and rendering. I’m also curious if hunting down a used Leica 35mm Summarit is worth the extra premium over the third-party options.
My main priorities are a compact form factor—I want to keep the kit as portable as possible—and decent wide-open performance for street photography. I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest lens available, but rather the one that delivers that classic rangefinder 'look' without the massive Leica tax.
For those of you who have shot with multiple M-mount 35s, which one do you think hits that perfect sweet spot of price, build quality, and image rendering?
sooo i feel u on the light bank account haha. i just got into Leica too and honestly its a struggle. i actually tried an older Leica 35mm f/2.5 Summarit-M cuz i wanted that brand name, but unfortunately it just didnt feel right for the price. i was realy disappointed with the build quality for how much i paid... definitely felt like i was just paying for the logo. Anyway, for ur situation, i think these are your best bets:
- Voigtländer 35mm f/2.0 Ultron Vintage Line Type II ASPH: This is LITERALLY the one. Its tiny, super sharp, and has that classic look. Highkey the best bang for buck.
- Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C-Biogon T* ZM: Insanely sharp but i think f/2.8 is kinda slow for street work sometimes. Basically, just grab the Ultron. I had issues with other lenses being too bulky but this one fits the M10 perfectly. good luck!
Just sharing my experience: I went through this exact same hunt last year after my M10 purchase wiped out my savings haha. Honestly, my biggest concern was safety and reliability—like, what if I spend $700 on a third-party lens and the mount fails or the rangefinder coupling is inaccurate? That would literally ruin the whole Leica experience. I actually tried a super cheap sub-$300 lens first, and it felt so flimsy I was highkey scared it was gonna jam my mount! I eventually realized that "value" isn't just the lowest price; it's knowing your gear won't fail you on the street. Here’s what I found hits that sweet spot of safety and performance: * Zeiss 35mm f/2 Biogon T* ZM: This is basically a tank. The build quality is fantastic and it feels way more secure than the budget alternatives. I’ve never had a "wobble" issue with it, which gives me so much peace of mind when I'm out all day.
* Voigtlander 35mm f/1.5 Nokton Aspherical VM: If you need that f/1.5 speed for low light, this is amazing. The mechanical tolerances are super tight compared to the older versions. It feels really robust in the hand, you know?
* Leica 35mm f/2.4 Summarit-M ASPH.: If you gotta have the brand name, hunt for the f/2.4 version specifically. It feels a bit more modern and reliable than the older f/2.5 models. Basically, don't just look at the price tag—look at how the lens is built to last! Those three are all fantastic and totally safe bets for your M10. gl with the choice! peace ✌️
I feel u. Check out the Fred Miranda forums for side-bysides. That Voigtländer 35mm f/2 Ultron Vintage Line u mentioned is basically the winner, or maybe try 7artisans 35mm f/2.0 for a budget option tho.
Late to the party but I've had a different experience! Respectfully, I'd consider another option... the Ultron is popular, but honestly, the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C-Biogon T* ZM is a technical masterpiece. Its MTF charts are literally insane!! - Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C-Biogon T* ZM: Zero distortion, tiny.
- TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 M-mount: Best budget speed. Basically, the Zeiss sharpness is unmatched for the price. Highkey the best street lens tho!! gl
Same setup here, love it
