I’m looking for that one 'do-it-all' lens for my M-mount kit. I’m torn between a classic 35mm for wide views and a 50mm for tighter portraits. I need something compact yet fast enough for low-light evenings. Between those focal lengths, which specific lens do you find most versatile for a full day of street photography?
Curious about one thing: whats ur budget? Unfortunately Leica glass isnt as good as expected... well, ngl Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 Nokton Classic II SC VM is better technical value at $450.
Tbh, after 10 years, the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH is basically my do-it-all. It's faster for nights and more versatile for street than a 50mm, so u cant go wrong. gl!
sooo i saw this earlier and i totally get the struggle... i actually spent way too much on leica glass in the past and honestly i had issues with some of it not being as good as expected for the price. it's frustrating ngl. For your situation, if you want a 'do-it-all' lens that wont break the bank, here's what I recommend: * Voigtlander 35mm f/2.0 Ultron Vintage Line Aspherical VM Type II - this thing is tiny, super sharp, and basically stays on my camera 90% of the time. It's way more practical for all-day walking than a heavy f/1.4 lens.
* Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Planar T* ZM - if u really prefer that tighter 50mm look, this is a solid value choice. It's very reliable and costs way less than the leica equivalent. Honestly tho, 35mm is just more versatile for street stuff. You can always crop in a bit for portraits, but you cant 'crop out' when you're in a tight alleyway. Save your money for more film or a trip lol. gl!
Respectfully, I'd consider another option. I know most people swear by the 35mm, but I've actually had a different experience after a couple years of trying to make it work. I kinda think a 50mm is the 'safer' way to go for street photography, both for your gear and your own comfort. Basically, the 35mm forces you to be super close to people to get the shot. Honestly, that can be really intimidating and sometimes it's just not safe to be that close to strangers with a camera. I mean, staying back a bit with a 50mm gives you a better safety margin. Also, focusing wide-open on fast lenses is lowkey a nightmare on rangefinders if you aren't an expert. Going with a slightly slower, more reliable lens is a way better move if you want consistent shots without the stress of missing focus. If you want something that's literally bulletproof, check out the Zeiss 50mm f/2 Planar T* ZM. It's technically more reliable than some of the more expensive glass cuz it doesn't suffer from focus shift, and the build quality is highkey amazing. It's compact, fast enough for nights, and just feels... solid? Like, it’s a lens you can trust not to fail on you when you're out all day. I know it's not a 35mm, but for a do-it-all that keeps things simple and safe, it's my top pick. Hope that helps! 👍
