Hey everyone, I’ve recently taken the plunge into the Leica ecosystem after years of eyeing the M-system. I just picked up a 35mm Summicron-M ASPH, and honestly, the image quality and micro-contrast are even better than I had imagined. However, being a bit of a "nervous" new owner, I’m constantly worried about accidentally scratching that beautiful front element while I'm out shooting street photography or getting dust into the crevices of the lens barrel.
I know there’s a massive, never-ending debate about whether to use filters at all, but for my own peace of mind, I really want a high-quality UV or protector filter. My main concern is that I don't want to spend thousands on world-class German optics only to bottleneck the performance by putting a mediocre piece of glass in front of it. I’ve heard horror stories about cheap filters causing weird ghosting, loss of contrast, or even making the bokeh look nervous or busy.
I've been looking at the usual suspects like B+W—specifically their Master/Kaesemann lines with the MRC nano coating—and Heliopan, which I know both use Schott glass. I’ve also noticed that Leica makes their own E39 filters, but they are significantly more expensive than even the high-end third-party options. Is there a tangible difference in the coatings or the brass rings that justifies the "Leica on Leica" premium, or am I better off sticking with a reputable third party?
Another detail I'm worried about is the fitment. Some filters have thicker profiles that might interfere with the clip-on lens hoods or cause vignetting on wider lenses like a 28mm Elmarit. I’m looking for something that is as "invisible" as possible in terms of light transmission and color neutrality, while maintaining a slim enough build to work with original hoods.
For those of you who have been shooting M or SL glass for a while, what specific brands and models have you found to be the most transparent? Are the Leica-branded filters worth the extra investment, or is B+W/Heliopan the sweet spot for maintaining that signature rendering and sharpness?
scratched a lens once, pretty devastating. honestly, leica filters are overkill, so i'd suggest the B+W 39mm Master Clear MRC Nano 007 Filter... it's schott glass and wont vignette. stay safe!
Bookmarked, thanks!
Stumbled on this discussion and figured i'd weigh in since i've spent way too much time looking at transmission charts over the years. Honestly, the Leica filters are beautiful but the markup is wild. In my experience, if you want that same german schott glass without the red dot tax, the Heliopan 39mm Protection Filter SH-PMC is the way to go. The brass rings are key because they wont bind to your lens threads like cheaper aluminum ones do. If you're really looking at the technical specs tho, check out the Hoya 39mm HD3 UV. It has roughly 99.7 percent light transmission which is basically top of the class. It's also chemically hardened glass, so if you're worried about scratches or impacts while doing street stuff, it's a total tank. I've used them on my 35mm Summicron for a long time and the hood still clips on perfectly fine. You can find some solid comparison data on sites like Lenstip if you want to see the flare tests yourself... really helps narrow down what actually matters versus just marketing hype.
