Just got my Q3 yesterday and Im so hyped to take it out around Manhattan this weekend but man the grip is a bit slick. I was looking at the official Leica thumb support and also the Match Technical EP-SQ3 but people on some threads are saying the Match Technical one makes it kinda hard to reach the thumbwheel and the official one is like 250 bucks which is insane after spending 6k on the camera lol.

My main needs are:

  • easy access to the rear dial
  • secure feel for one-handed shooting
  • stays under $150 if possible

Has anyone tried the Haoge or IDS ones or should I just bite the bullet on the Leica brand?

^ This. Also, if you want to save some cash without trashing the hot shoe, the JJC TA-Q3 Thumbs Up Grip for Leica Q3 is actually a solid bet. Its way under 150 bucks, usually around 30 to 40, which is a steal compared to the Leica official one. I know people get weird about putting cheap gear on a 6k body, but the fit is surprisingly tight on this one. It has a little silicone pad that keeps it from scratching the top plate and it doesnt rattle at all in my experience. The arm is curved enough that you dont have to move your thumb much to hit that wheel. Just make sure you get the specific Q3 version since the older Q2 ones fit a bit weird. Honestly if you're worried about reliability, just check the seating every now and then. Its basic but it works and keeps your wallet happy for more lenses... definitely a decent option if you're trying to be sensible.

Quick reply while I have a sec! Like someone mentioned, hot shoe tolerances are vital. I've analyzed the CNC specs on the Haoge THB-Q3B Black Aluminum Thumb Grip and they're fantastic!

  • Haoge: Amazing dial access due to the low-profile arm design.
  • IDS Works Leica Q3 Modular Thumb Grip Aluminum: Superior ergonomic offset for one-handed stability. Quick clarification tho... are you using a half-case? That totally changes the leverage you'll need for Manhattan street shooting!

Ive tried many over the years and honestly, some third-party options can damage your hot shoe.

  • check for wiggle
  • watch for scratches Dont risk that body on poor quality.
