Which Voigtländer lenses perform best on Leica M-mount bodies?

So I finally pulled the trigger on a beat up M10 last week and my bank account is basically crying right now so genuine Leica glass is totally out of the question for at least a year. Im looking for a solid 35mm that wont break the bank but still looks sharp enough for street stuff around Brooklyn. Im stuck between:

  • the 35mm f1.4 Nokton Classic (v2)
  • the 35mm f2 Ultron Vintage Line

I keep hearing the Nokton has more character but the Ultron is way sharper wide open and I really dont want too much vignetting or weird smearing on the edges. If I only have about 800 bucks to spend right now which one of these actually plays nicest with the M sensor? Is the Ultron worth the extra bit of cash for the size?

Buy the Voigtlander 35mm f2 Ultron Vintage Line VM! It offers better sharpness, fits your budget, and performs fantastic on the M10. Dont worry about smearing, its amazing!

To add to the point above: I ran the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton Classic II VM on my old M9 for months. While it has that classic glow wide open, the barrel distortion can be a bit much for street stuff... kinda tricky for straight lines. Quick tip: if you go with the Nokton, try to find a used copy. Youll save like 300 bucks compared to new, which basically pays for your batteries and a strap.

What kind of lighting do you usually shoot in? If you are mostly hitting the streets during the day, look at the Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 Color-Skopar PII VM. Its tiny and sharp across the frame. If you really need speed tho, check the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 Nokton Vintage Line Aspherical VM. It handles the M10 sensor better than old 1.4 because the updated aspherical design cuts down on the smearing you are worried about.

Like someone mentioned, those newer optical designs really do handle the M10 sensor much better than the older glass. I have been very satisfied with how my kit performs and it has been nothing but reliable for daily use in the city. No complaints here. Before you commit your cash, I have a couple questions to see if those two are actually your best bets:

  • Are you mostly shooting in bright daylight or are you planning on doing a lot of handheld work at night?
  • Have you looked at any options from other brands like Zeiss or even some vintage Canon LTM glass? That M10 is a great choice tho, you are gonna have a blast with it once you get the lens situation sorted out.
