I just got an OM-5 for my trip to Glacier Park next month and I am honestly so overwhelmed by all the gear. I need a tripod but I dont even know what to look for or if there are special ones for small cameras? My logic was that since the camera is tiny the tripod should be tiny too but then I saw some that look like toys and I'm worried itll just tip over if it gets windy.
I only have about 120 bucks left to spend so I cant get anything crazy expensive. Should I be looking at those flexible ones or just a normal metal one? I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question I just dont want my new camera to break on the first day...
@Reply #2 - good point! I have been very satisfied with the Benro Slim Carbon Fiber Lightweight Tripod for my OM-D gear. It works well because it is rigid but still incredibly light. A couple practical tips for stability:
Re: "Your logic about small cameras needing small tripods..."
Your logic about small cameras needing small tripods makes sense, but those flexible ones can be pretty frustrating in windy spots like Glacier. Since you have a 120 budget, look into aluminum travel tripods instead. They offer much better stability than the plastic toy versions while still being light enough for hiking. The Sirui T-005S Aluminum Tripod with B-00K Ball Head is a solid choice that fits M4/3 gear well. It's compact but feels sturdy. Another reliable option is the Vanguard VEO 3GO 204AB Aluminum Travel Tripod. Most of these models include a weight hook on the center column. If it gets windy, just hang your backpack from that hook to keep the legs planted. It's a cheap way to get extra stability without buying a heavy, expensive rig...
