Looking for lens recommendations for my new GH7. Mostly shooting video, some stills. Budget around $1500. What are your go-to lenses for this camera?

Honestly, I totally agree with the point about branching out. Like, after years of owning MFT gear, the build quality on the high-end glass from Olympus is sooo good. Basically, if you're gonna be shooting a lot of video on the GH7, you really want lenses with linear focus motors. It makes manual pulls way more predictable, you know? I’ve found that the premium lines from the main MFT manufacturers generally hold up way better over time, especially with the weather sealing and stuff. I'm not 100% sure on the latest technical data for every single glass element, but the professional-tier stuff is usually a safe bet for that 'clinical' look if that's what you're after. Just stick to the premium-labeled lines from the big brands and you'll be set for years. TL;DR: Invest in the professional lines from Olympus or the Leica-badged ones. They’ve got the best long-term reliability and better focus control for video.

One thing you gotta watch out for when picking glass for the GH7 is lens breathing, especially if youre doing focus pulls in 4K. It can totally ruin a shot if the framing shifts too much. Also, dont ignore the diffraction limit on MFT sensors. Once you stop down past f/5.6 or f/8, youre gonna see a noticeable drop in sharpness because of the high pixel density on that sensor. For long-term use, definitely avoid lenses without internal sealing. The GH7 is a tank, but if you put a non-weather-sealed lens on it, youre basically just asking for dust and moisture to get into the mount or the sensor chamber over time. Also, check the focus motor type... if its not linear, your manual focus pulls will be a nightmare because of the variable speed response. Tbh its better to invest in glass that has consistent physical feedback if youre planning to keep this kit for a few years.

Hey! Still kinda new myself, but the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 is awesome for the price. Got mine used for like $150. Super sharp for video, and it's tiny! Worth checking out, right?

For video on the GH7, consider the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. Its constant aperture is clutch for consistent exposure. Wide open, the shallow depth of field is killer. You might need a speedbooster to maximize the field of view due to the Micro Four Thirds sensor. Have you considered that?

Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 is sharp and cheap. Spend the rest on good audio!

Heads-up on heavy lenses! Consider a sturdy tripod; GH7's mount isn't indestructible. The Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 is relatively light, reducing stress. Happy shooting!

Forget brand loyalty! Market data shows Sigma's 18-35mm f/1.8 is a video powerhouse for GH7. Check used prices; you might snag it for under $500 and still have budget left!
