I’ve recently fully committed to the Micro Four Thirds system with a mix of Olympus Pro and Panasonic Leica glass, but I’m struggling with the varying filter thread sizes. It’s a bit of a headache carrying different sets for my 12-40mm and my smaller primes. I’m also looking to adapt some old vintage glass I have, but I’m worried about maintaining autofocus speed and image quality. Does anyone have a preferred setup for high-quality ND filters or reliable mount adapters that won't break the bank? I’m particularly curious if step-up rings are the way to go or if a magnetic system is better for M4/3. What are your must-have filters and adapters for this system?
Coming back to this... ngl I went through the same gear headache with my 12-40mm and those tiny primes. For your situation, I highkey recommend going magnetic over standard step-up rings. It's sooo much faster in the field.
1. **Magnetic Systems:** Instead of screwing things on, get a large 77mm set and use magnetic base rings on all your glass. The Freewell Magnetic Variable ND Filter System is basically the gold standard here. It’s fast and the color shift is minimal.
2. **Smart Adapters:** If you're adapting older Canon EF glass and want to keep AF, the Viltrox EF-M2 II Mount Adapter is a solid mid-range choice. It’s a focal reducer, so it definately helps with low light and gives a wider FOV by a factor of 0.71x.
3. **Manual Adapters:** For true vintage M42 or Canon FD glass (where AF isnt possible anyway), just stick to something like the Fotasy Canon FD Lens to Micro 4/3 Adapter. They're cheap, all-metal, and honestly work just as well as the expensive ones for purely manual glass.
I think the magnetic setup is the real game changer tho... it saves so much time. cheers!!
In my experience, I suggest:
- K&F Concept Step Up Ring Filter Adapter Set for 77mm filters.
- K&F Concept Lens Mount Adapter for M42 to MFT.
Be careful, vintage glass wont have AF lol.
Same here!
Quick question - what mounts are ur vintage lenses? In my experience, an Urth Lens Mount Adapter and Hoya 77mm Variable ND Filter with step-up rings is ur best budget bet. gl!
