Hey everyone! I’ve recently fallen back in love with street photography after picking up a compact Micro Four Thirds body (using the Lumix GX9 right now). While the kit zoom is okay for general travel, I’m finding it a bit too slow and conspicuous when I'm trying to blend into the crowd or capture those candid moments in lower light. I really want that 'stealth' factor that MFT is famous for.
I’m looking to invest in one or two high-quality primes that truly highlight the system's strengths—portability and sharpness. I’ve been doing some research, but I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by the options. I’m torn between a few specific focal lengths. For instance, I can’t decide if I should go for something wider like the Panasonic Leica 15mm f/1.7 or the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 to get that classic environmental street look, or if I should stick to a standard 25mm (50mm equivalent) for tighter compositions.
Size is a huge factor for me because I want my setup to be as low-profile as possible. I’ve even looked at the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens because it’s so tiny, but I’ve heard conflicting reports about its autofocus speed on older vs. newer bodies. Since street photography is all about quick reactions, I’m a bit worried about hunting for focus and missing the shot.
My budget is around $400-$500 per lens, and I’m totally fine with buying used to get better glass. I mostly shoot during the day, but I love the look of neon-lit streets at night, so having a fast aperture for those low-light handheld shots is a big priority for me.
For those of you who have been shooting MFT for a while, which prime lenses are permanently glued to your camera when you're out on the pavement? If you had to pick just one 'must-have' lens for a full day of wandering the city, which one would you recommend and why?
In my experience, grab the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH because its super snappy. ngl Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH is tiny but focuses way too slow for street shots...
Bookmarked, thanks!
Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, snappy autofocus is basically non-negotiable for street stuff... if it hunts, the moment's gone lol. I've been there, missed so many shots with older glass. Tbh, are you mostly shooting from the hip or through the viewfinder? Also, is weather sealing a big deal for you? That'll help narrow down the best value options for those neon night shots!!
Oh man, I absolutely love the GX9! Its such a fantastic little beast for the price, especially if you snagged it used. Quick question though before I weigh in... are you mostly hitting up super crowded spots or are you more of a lone wolf in the quiet backstreets? I always worry about being too flashy with gear in certain neighborhoods at night, so i tend to be pretty conservative with what I carry. Actually, that reminds me of this one time I was in Seattle looking for those cool neon signs near the market. I got so distracted by this street performer playing a flaming tuba that I almost walked straight into a giant puddle and ruined my shoes! I ended up spending the rest of the night in a CVS buying cheap socks and talking to the cashier about his favorite local dive bars. He gave me a list of like ten places that had the best craft beer, so I basically gave up on photos and went on a pub crawl instead. Best night ever tbh. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there...
> Size is a huge factor for me because I want my setup to be as low-profile as possible. I’ve even looked at the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens because it’s so tiny, but I’ve heard conflicting reports about its autofocus speed... Honestly its ridiculous how hard this decision is. I have been going through the exact same struggle for months now and its driving me crazy. The whole promise of MFT was supposed to be these tiny, high-performance setups, but lately it feels like the big brands have totally checked out on making new, affordable compact primes. Panasonic seems more interested in their full-frame stuff now and OM System just wants to sell those massive Pro lenses that cost a fortune. It feels like a scam when you look at the prices for glass that hasnt been updated in a decade. Why are we still dealing with slow AF motors in 2024? Its so frustrating because the GX9 is such a great street camera but finding that perfect balance of size, speed, and price is basically impossible now. I spend more time staring at used listings than actually shooting because everything is either too big or too old. Its such a mess tbh.
