What are the actual best compact zoom lenses for MFT that wont break the bank or my back? Im getting so stressed out trying to pick something for my trip to Japan in three weeks and honestly the more I read the more I feel like im gonna make the wrong choice. I have a Lumix GX85 and I really want to keep the whole setup pocketable or at least small enough to fit in a tiny sling bag while im walking around Tokyo all day.
Ive been looking at the Panasonic 12-32mm pancake since everyone says its tiny and cheap but then I read some forum posts saying the plastic mount breaks easily and the image quality isnt great in low light which worries me because I want to take night shots of the neon signs. Then I saw the Olympus 9-18mm which looks cool for wide angles but its kind of an older design and I cant tell if its worth the $400 price tag even on the used market. My budget is strictly under $500 because I already spent way too much on flights.
Does anyone actually use these tiny zooms for travel photography or am I better off just bringing a prime lens and zooming with my feet even though I know Ill miss the wide shots? I just dont want to be lugging around a huge pro lens all day while my neck is killing me...
Im super happy with these tiny zooms for my GX85:
> night shots of the neon signs In my experience, night photography depends heavily on your specific setup. Are you planning to shoot those handheld or will you be carrying a small travel tripod? Since you have a GX85, keep in mind that Olympus lenses wont support Dual IS, tho the internal stabilization is still good. If durability is a concern, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ is a more robust alternative to the 12-32mm. You can find used units for under $200, which stays way under budget.
Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming in. Super helpful discussion.
