I finally pulled the trigger on a Lumix GH6 for this indie documentary I'm shooting in Seattle next month but man I am actually so frustrated right now. I thought buying the body was the hard part but the hidden costs are just killing me. Every video I watch says something different and my head is spinning.
I read online that you absolutely need those CFexpress Type B cards if you want to use the best codecs but they are like $200 a pop for a decent one. Then I saw a thread saying ProGrade v90 SD cards work for almost everything except the highest bitrates so now I dont know if I should drop $400 on cards or if I can get away with the SDs I already have from my old GH5. Plus people keep complaining about the battery life being way worse than the older models and saying I need a V-mount setup or a dummy battery which just adds more weight and money to my rig.
I'm already way over my initial $2500 budget and I still havent even looked at cages or decent monitors. I just need to know what are the absolute bare minimum essential accessories I need to actually go out and shoot for a full day without the camera dying or running out of space mid-interview. Do I really need the expensive media right away or is that just for pros?
Been through that exact gear spiral myself. I'm honestly so satisfied with using a Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD for my GH6. It handles those heavy 1.9Gbps ProRes bitrates without any issues.
Check the Lumix compatibility list... I'd grab a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB CFexpress Type B for reliability over SD cards for high bitrates. It handles heat better tho, even if it costs more.
Honestly, if you want to stay safe without the V-mount bulk, just grab a few Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery spares. They're reliable. For media, a ProGrade Digital 128GB UHS-II SDXC V90 is a decent option and handles most things besides ProRes. It lets you save money for the actual shoot. Better to have reliable storage than one fancy card imo. You wont regret it.
