What filters are actually necessary for shooting video on a micro four thirds camera because I am totally lost right now. I just got a GH5 for my cousins outdoor wedding in Austin this Saturday and all my test footage looks super bright and weirdly stuttery. Someone mentioned I need an ND filter to keep the shutter speed right but then I see stuff about polarizers and mist filters and my head is spinning. I only have like 100 bucks left to spend before the weekend and I really dont want to ruin her video. Do I just get one variable thing or is there a specific kit for beginners? Sorry if this is a dumb question I just really need to know the bare essentials fast...

^ This. Also, in my experience, the Urth 67mm Variable ND2-400 Filter (Plus+) is a total lifesaver when you're on a budget. I've tried many over the years and this glass is surprisingly clean for the price. That weird stuttering is just your shutter speed being way too high in the sun. The ND lets you drop it to 1/60 for that natural motion blur. TL;DR: Grab a variable ND to fix the stutter and stay under budget.

Just found this thread. Like someone mentioned, variables are convenient, but I actually prefer fixed NDs for weddings. I remember one Austin shoot where my cheap variable filter gave me a nasty blue tint that was basically impossible to fix.

Man, the GH5 is such an absolute beast for video! I remember shooting a music festival in that Austin heat and without an ND filter, my footage looked like a jittery strobe mess because the shutter speed was hitting 1/4000 just to keep the exposure down. You gotta hit that 180-degree shutter rule for smooth motion, basically meaning your shutter should be double your frame rate. Forget the mist filters for now, just focus on exposure control first.

  • K&F Concept 67mm Variable ND2-ND32 Nano-X is a fantastic budget pick. It gives you 1 to 5 stops of light reduction and I love that it has hard stops to prevent the dreaded X-pattern on your sensor.
  • Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is my go-to for weddings tho. It has a slightly warm cast that makes skin tones look incredible in the Texas sun. Grab the Tiffen if you can, its worth it for the reliability alone!
