Hi everyone! I’ve recently switched to the Micro Four Thirds system because I wanted a more portable setup for my street walks. I’m currently using a Lumix body with the standard kit zoom, but I’m ready to invest in a high-quality prime to get that extra sharpness and better low-light performance. I’m really looking for something compact and discrete that won’t intimidate people. I've been eyeing the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 and the Panasonic 20mm pancake, but I’m worried about autofocus speed for those quick candid moments. Does anyone have experience with these, or is there a better 'hidden gem' I should consider for a 35mm or 50mm equivalent focal length?

Just saw this thread! Quick question—whats ur budget? If u want a cheap gem, the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH is usually $150. It uses a faster stepper motor than the 20mm pancake, which technically helps with AF speed for street. Sharpness is solid for the price too! TL;DR: Whats the budget? Also, do u prefer a 35mm or 50mm equivalent more?

In my experience, I've cycled through most of these on my Lumix bodies and honestly... the AF speed really varies!! Here's the breakdown of the best street options: * Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8: Super snappy AF and that 34mm equiv is classic. I love the manual focus clutch too!!
* Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH: Seriously amazing sharpness, but yeah, the AF motor is *old* and definitely hunts in low light. * Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH: This is basically the hidden gem!! Fast AF, 30mm equiv, and the build quality is fantastic. If ur worried about missing shots, the 15mm is the way to go. It's way faster than the 20mm pancake and feels great on a small body. gl! 👍

Yeah I totally agree that AF hunting is a huge worry when you're just starting out because missing a candid shot is basically the worst feeling ever and I'm always worried I'm gonna mess it up!! Honestly since you're on a Lumix body I think staying with Panasonic lenses might be safer for the autofocus reliability because of that DFD tech they use which helps the lens and camera talk to each other better so you don't get those weird glitches. I'm still kinda new to this but I really value gear that just works every time without hunting around. Here are two I think are super reliable for those quick moments:
* Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f/1.8 - Even though it's not Panasonic it is known for being way more snappy and consistent than the 20mm pancake and it gives you that 50mm look you wanted without being too big.
* Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH POWER O.I.S. - This is a bit longer at an 85mm equivalent but it lets you stay further away so you're more discrete and it has built-in stabilization which is a huge safety net for handheld shots. I'm always scared of getting dust or moisture inside my gear so do you think you'll need weather sealing too? Or is the kit zoom you have now holding up okay for your walks?

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
