I’ve recently fully committed to the Micro Four Thirds system, trading in my bulky full-frame gear for an OM System OM-1 and a couple of Pro lenses. The size and weight savings have been a total game-changer for my hiking trips, but now I’m realizing my old, heavy aluminum tripod is completely overkill. It feels a bit ridiculous carrying a five-pound tripod for a camera setup that weighs significantly less than that.
I’m on the hunt for a compact tripod that really matches the MFT philosophy of being small but powerful. I mainly do landscape photography and some long exposure work at blue hour, so stability is a huge priority for me, even if there’s a bit of a breeze. I really want something that I can just strap to the side of a small daypack and forget it’s even there until I need it.
I have a few specific requirements in mind:
I’ve looked at the Peak Design Carbon Fiber and some of the Benro Slim options, but I am torn between spending more for carbon fiber or sticking with a high-end aluminum model. I'm a bit worried that the thinnest leg sections on these ultra-portable models might be too flimsy for long exposures.
For those of you shooting with Lumix or OM System bodies, which compact tripod have you found offers the best balance of portability and rock-solid stability?
yo, honestly i feel u on the weight thing—carrying a heavy tripod with an MFT kit basically defeats the purpose of the whole system!! Since u mentioned stability at 300mm eq focal lengths, i think u might want to be careful with the ultra-portable 5-section models because those thinnest leg sections can be kinda sketchy in a breeze. Heres what i recommend: definitely spend the extra cash and go for a carbon fiber model without a center column if u want maximum stability. In my experience, the Leofoto LS-225C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with LH-25 Ball Head is a serious beast for its size. It folds down to like 13.7 inches so it fits in a carry-on no problem, and it stays way under your 2.5lb limit. The 10-layer carbon fiber is actually really stiff, but i would suggest not extending that last tiny leg section if youre doing long exposures during blue hour. I checked out the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod too, but it actually weighs about 2.8 lbs, so it might be a bit over your limit. Plus, it can be a bit vibey at 150mm or 300mm due to the unique leg shape. If u want something super tiny, maybe check out the Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with B-00K Ball Head? Its super light and actually holds up okay with my OM System OM-1 and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens, but seriously, carbon fiber is worth it for the vibration dampening alone... anyway gl with the hunt!
So I'm just catching up on this thread and honestly, congrats on the OM-1 move!! I did the same thing and it's like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders lol. But yeah, the tripod struggle is real. Basically, tripods follow a rule where you gotta choose between price, weight, and stability. Since you're shooting at 300mm, stability is highkey the most important part. Even a tiny bit of wind will ruin a long exposure if the leg sections are too thin and vibrate. Before I give advice, I'm curious about one thing: what's your actual budget for this? And are you okay with a tripod that doesn't reach eye-level? Going a bit shorter usually saves a lot of weight and keeps things way more stable for those blue hour shots. TL;DR: Stability at 300mm is tough for travel gear. Need to know your budget and height requirements before suggesting the best value options!
