Hi everyone! I’ve been shooting with my OM-5 for about a year now, and while I love the versatility of the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro zoom, I’m finding myself wanting to switch to a more compact, single-lens setup for my daily walks. I’m looking for that one goldilocks prime lens that can stay on my camera most of the time without feeling too specialized.

I primarily enjoy street photography and capturing candid moments of my family indoors, so low-light performance is definitely a priority. I’ve been debating between the classic Olympus 17mm f1.8 because of its tiny size and the newer OM System 20mm f1.4 Pro for that extra bit of weather sealing and sharpness. I’m a bit worried the 17mm might be too wide for portraits, while the 25mm might feel a bit tight in smaller rooms.

It’s a bit overwhelming trying to decide which focal length truly defines versatile in the Micro Four Thirds world. I want something that feels balanced on a smaller body and doesn't weigh me down during long days out.

For those of you who have moved to a prime-only setup, which single lens do you find yourself reaching for the most when you can only bring one?

In my experience, I actually went through this exact same struggle with my om-5 like last year!! i started with the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 cuz it's so tiny but it felt kinda wide for family shots. then i tried the OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 20mm f1.4 PRO and it basically never leaves my camera now. i guess it's the perfect middle ground... i think the 20mm is just way more versatile for street and indoor pics anyway!!

> I’m looking for that one goldilocks prime lens that can stay on my camera most of the time without feeling too specialized. I remember when I first swapped my heavy zoom for a single prime, i was terrified of missing shots. I actually ended up with the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f1.8 after struggling with the distortion on wider lenses for indoor shots of my family. Be careful with the 17mm or even the 20mm because they can really stretch people out at the edges of the frame if you arent careful with your composition. You might want to consider the 25mm f1.8 even if it feels tight on paper. I found that just taking one step back usually solves the room size issue, and the optical quality for the price is honestly hard to beat. I ran some tests on my copy and the center sharpness at f1.8 is surprisingly close to some of the Pro glass I have used. Make sure to watch out for the plastic build tho, it doesnt have the weather sealing of your 12-40mm, so dont get it soaked. It balances perfectly on my OM-5 and basically weighs nothing... definitely worth a look if youre trying to save some cash but still want that fast AF for kids.
