Which external flash is most recommended for Panasonic and Olympus bodies?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently fully committed to the Micro Four Thirds system, currently rocking a Lumix G9 and an older Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV. I’m loving the portability of these setups, but I’m hitting a wall when it comes to indoor events and low-light portraits. I really need to pick up a solid external flash that plays nicely with both bodies without breaking the bank.

I’ve been looking at the official Panasonic and Olympus options, but honestly, they seem quite pricey compared to third-party brands. I've heard a lot of buzz about the Godox system—specifically the V350o or the TT685o—because of their built-in radio triggering, but I’m a bit confused about how well the TTL and High-Speed Sync (HSS) actually translate between the two camera brands. Does one flash truly work seamlessly across both, or are there weird firmware quirks I should be worried about?

Size is also a huge factor for me; I don't want something so massive that it makes my compact Olympus feel top-heavy. My budget is around $150-$250. Does anyone have a "holy grail" recommendation that balances power, size, and reliable cross-brand compatibility? What are you guys currently using on your MFT rigs?

For your situation, I would suggest sticking with the Godox system because their "o" versions are literally designed for the shared MFT hotshoe protocol. I've used these across both brands and honestly, the TTL and HSS translate perfectly between my Lumix and Olympus bodies. No weird firmware quirks in my experience, but make sure to keep the firmware updated anyway! Here is how I see your options: * Godox V350O Li-ion Camera Flash for Olympus/Panasonic: This is basically the holy grail for portability. It uses a lithium battery (fast recycling!) and won't make your E-M10 feel top-heavy. Might be slightly less powerful than the big boys tho.
* Godox TT685O TTL Camera Flash for Olympus/Panasonic: It's a powerhouse for the G9, but seriously, it's huge. It feels kinda sketchy on a small Olympus body. I'd probably go with the V350O. It hits that $160ish price point and just feels right on MFT gear. Good luck!

> Does one flash truly work seamlessly across both, or are there weird firmware quirks I should be worried about? In my experience, the cross-brand thing is actually pretty reliable because the hotshoe pinout is identical for both Lumix and Olympus. Over the years, I've swapped several units between my bodies and the TTL usually translates just fine. I think I heard something about certain third-party flashes having HSS timing issues on the newer Lumix bodies like the G9, but I'm not 100 percent sure if that's still an issue after the recent firmware updates. One thing to keep in mind is the weight distribution. Even if the tech works, a full-sized pro flash makes an E-M10 feel super unbalanced. IIRC, some people prefer using a dedicated radio commander on the camera while keeping the actual flash on a small bracket or just holding it. It takes the strain off the hotshoe and gives you better angles anyway. Someone told me that the communication protocol is basically identical, so as long as the flash is designated for Micro Four Thirds, you should be golden on either body.
