Hey everyone! I’ve been a dedicated Olympus shooter for a few years now, currently using the OM-D E-M1 Mark III and occasionally my older E-M5 Mark II. I absolutely love the Micro Four Thirds system for its portability, but I’ve hit a bit of a wall lately when it comes to lighting. Most of my work is outdoors, but I’ve recently signed up for a few indoor event gigs and family portrait sessions where the ambient light just isn't cutting it.
I’m in the market for an external flash, but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the choices. I really want something that integrates seamlessly with the Olympus TTL (Through The Lens) system because I often move fast and don't have time to fiddle with manual settings in a changing environment. One of my biggest concerns is the physical size and weight; I chose the OM-D series specifically because it’s compact, so I’d love to find a flash that doesn’t make the whole rig feel incredibly top-heavy or unbalanced during a long shoot.
I’ve been eyeing the Olympus FL-700WR since it’s weather-sealed (which is a huge plus for my E-M1), but the price tag is making me hesitate a bit. On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of people in the community recommending the Godox V350O or the TT350O as more budget-friendly, compact alternatives. Does the Godox system play nicely with the Olympus menus and wireless triggering, or is it a headache to set up? Also, I really need something with a decent recycle time so I don't miss those candid moments.
I’m looking for a solid balance between power and portability, hopefully keeping the budget under $300 if possible, though I'm willing to stretch for the right gear. If you use an OM-D body, what has been your experience with external flashes? Which one provides the best 'set it and forget it' experience while still giving me enough power to bounce light off a high ceiling?
For your situation, I’d suggest the Godox V350O Li-Ion Outdoor Flash for Olympus/Panasonic. Its basically the gold standard for MFT cuz the Li-ion battery gives you way faster recycle times than AAs. It plays nice with Olympus TTL too. If you need more power, the Nissin i60A for Micro Four Thirds is tiny but packs a punch. Just watch the plastic feet on third-party gear, they're fragile. gl!
yo, i totally get where youre coming from... i've been shooting with the om-d system for years and the balance is EVERYTHING. i actually use the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III too and putting a massive flash on it literally ruins the whole point of mft portability. here is how i see it based on my experience with both native and godox systems: * **Olympus FL-700WR Electronic Flash**: honestly, this is the "buy once, cry once" choice. it's pricey but it's built like a tank and fully weather-sealed. the ttl integration is basically perfect—you can control everything from the camera menu without looking at the flash. it balances perfectly on the e-m1 without feeling like it's gonna tip over during a long day.
* **Godox V350O Li-ion Camera Flash**: if u dont wanna spend $350+, this is the best alternative. the li-ion battery is the key here. recycle times are WAY better than the AA version and it lasts forever. it plays pretty well with the oly wireless system but it's not quite as "invisible" in the menus as the native gear.
* **Godox TT350O Mini TTL Flash**: be careful with this one. it's cheap and light, but the recycle time is kinda slow for candid moments because it runs on two AAs. if you're shooting a fast-paced event, you're gonna be waiting on the "ready" beep and missing shots. honestly, for your indoor gigs, i would suggest stretching the budget for the Olympus FL-700WR. since you already have a weather-sealed body, it's a bit of a waste to put a non-sealed flash on top if you ever end up shooting in light rain or dust at a wedding or something. but yeah, if you gotta stay under $300, the Godox V350O is the only third-party one i'd trust for speed. gl!
