I just got a Nikon Z50 and I'm looking for recommendations on the best lenses to enhance my photography. I primarily shoot landscapes and portraits, but I'm also interested in low-light performance and versatility. What lenses do you suggest that offer great quality.

Just saw this. You might want to consider the crop factor before buying full-frame glass for your Z50. Since its a 1.5x sensor, everything gets multiplied, so a 50mm feels like a 75mm. I would suggest looking at these specific options to cover your bases:

  • Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 24mm f/1.7: Seriously, grab this for low light. Its fast and gives you a 36mm equivalent which is basically the gold standard for street and general use. Be careful about purple fringing in high contrast scenes tho, it happens sometimes with these faster primes.
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2: This is technically an FX lens but it works like a charm on the DX body as a 60mm portrait lens. Its tiny, but remember it lacks VR, so you will want to keep your shutter speed faster than 1/80 or so to avoid camera shake since the Z50 doesnt have IBIS.
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR: Essential for landscapes. Its got internal zooming which is neat for keeping dust out, but the power zoom might feel a bit laggy if youre used to mechanical rings. Make sure you update your firmware too, sometimes it helps with the AF tracking on these newer lenses. Ngl, the Z50 is a fun kit but you gotta pick glass that compensates for the lack of stabilization in the body.

Having used the NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR on the Z50, I can attest to its versatility. This lens delivers solid image quality across its impressive wide-to-telephoto range. While showing some distortion at 18mm, it maintains good sharpness throughout the zoom range. The plastic build keeps it lightweight - a perfect match for the Z50's compact body. Autofocus performs reliably, and the VR system helps with stability. At around $350, it offers excellent value as an all-in-one lens for everyday photography.
