So I got this Nikon D850 from my uncle and honestly I feel way in over my head. I tried taking some photos at a dinner party last night and they all came out super grainy and dark because there's no little flash thing that pops out of the top like on my old point and shoot? I didnt even realize it didnt have one when I got it. I've been googling but there are so many options and I dont want to break anything or buy the wrong thing and I'm really worried I'll mess up the camera electronics.

Some of the flashes are like $600 which is crazy but then there are cheap ones for $40 that people say are junk and might catch fire or something. I have about $300 saved up and I really need to figure this out before my cousins wedding in Chicago in two weeks because she expects me to take some pro shots since I have this big camera now. I'm honestly panicking a bit lol. Everything talks about TTL and sync speeds and I have no idea what any of that means I just want it to work when I press the button without me having to do math. Is there a specific external flash that you'd recommend for a D850 that is easy for a total beginner to use?

I totally get the panic, the D850 is a massive step up. When I first got mine, I had no clue why my indoor shots were dark till I realized there was no built-in flash. Total game changer. Definitely look for a mid-range unit with TTL so it does the math for you.

  • Point light at the ceiling
  • Keep it on auto Its way easier than it looks. Ask if you need help!
