I've been a Nikon shooter for about ten years now, and I finally decided to make the full transition from my trusty D850 over to the mirrorless world with a Z6 II and a Z7. I am honestly blown away by the sharpness of the S-line lenses and how much easier the eye-autofocus makes my life during portrait sessions. However, I am struggling a bit with my lighting setup. My old SB-700 and some older third-party units just aren't cutting it anymore. I've noticed some weird communication errors where the flash won't fire occasionally, and the AF assist beam on the flash doesn't seem to work with the mirrorless sensors anyway.

I primarily shoot a mix of corporate events and high-end family portraits, so I need something that is both versatile and powerful. I really want to move away from AA batteries if possible, as I'm tired of carrying around four plastic cases of Eneloops for a single day of shooting. I’ve heard a lot of conflicting reports about whether to stick with native Nikon gear or if the third-party ecosystem has caught up enough to be professional-grade for the Z system.

Specifically, I am looking for a few key features:

  • Seamless i-TTL integration for when I'm moving quickly between different lighting environments.
  • Fast recycle times so I don't miss the important shots during a cake cutting or a keynote speech.
  • Robust build quality that can handle being shoved in and out of a camera bag all day.

I’ve been looking closely at the Nikon SB-5000, but I’m also seeing the Godox V1-N mentioned everywhere because of that round head and the magnetic modifiers. Then there is the Profoto A10, which looks amazing but is definitely a massive investment. For those of you who have been using the Z6 or Z7 for a while, which external flash have you found to be the most reliable and consistent for your professional work?

I made the jump to mirrorless last year and honestly, the lithium batteries are a total lifesaver. I've been using the Godox V1-N Round Head Flash for Nikon for my events and it's basically replaced my old SB units. The recycle time is crazy fast. If you've got the budget, the Profoto A10 AirTTL-N Studio Light is definitely more robust, but the Godox is way better value for money tbh.

Jumping in here because I went through this exact same headache last year. I ended up picking up the Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon and it has been a total workhorse. It uses the same lithium battery as the V1 but its a bit cheaper and the traditional head shape fits my old modifiers better. Honestly, the modeling light on it is actually super helpful for the Z mirrorless sensors in dark halls. Definitely saved me some cash!

Are you planning on doing mostly on-camera work or are you looking to integrate these into a larger off-camera setup later? Just a heads up tho, some of those newer lithium units have a tendency to overheat way faster than your old gear if you're firing heavy bursts. Also, remember that AF assist beam issue is a hardware thing with mirrorless sensors, so dont expect a new flash to solve that part.

Caught this thread late but wanted to add a different perspective on reliability. If you are doing pro events, look at Westcott FJ80 II M Universal Speedlight. The build is solid and the interface is way less clunky than Godox. I also keep a Nissin MG80 Pro Flash for Nikon in my bag because it is a tank and handles high-volume shooting without overheating. Two quick tips for the Z system:

  • Always check Flash Havoc for independent sync speed tests before buying. It is the best resource for real-world data.
  • Check your Z6 II firmware version immediately. Nikon patched several TTL communication issues in recent updates that were causing those intermittent misfires with third-party gear. The lithium life is definitely the way to go tho, you wont miss those AAs at all.

Just caught this thread today. Before I get into the weeds with gear, quick question: are you mostly using the flash on-camera for those events, or are you looking to build an off-camera setup? That makes a huge difference for reliability and which triggers youll need. Couple quick tips to save some frustration:

  • Mirrorless sensors literally cant see the red AF assist beams on flashes. Youll have to rely on the cameras built-in light or just keep some ambient light up.
  • Make sure your Z6II firmware is updated. Some of those early communication glitches were actually body bugs, not flash issues. If you want total reliability, the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is the gold standard for TTL accuracy, but yeah, the AA battery thing is a pain. For a pro alternative that handles heat better than Godox, maybe check out the Nissin MG60 Flash for Nikon. It is way more compact but built like a tank. How many shots are you usually ripping through in a single burst?
