so i have this nikon d850 that my uncle gave me and i have basically no idea how to use it yet but im going on this big trip to the swiss alps in like two weeks and i really want to get those cool blurry water shots of the waterfalls. i realized i need a tripod for that but oh my god there are so many options i feel like my brain is melting. i spent all night looking at websites and i still dont get it. like my logic was just buy the cheapest one but then i read a review saying cheap tripods are basically just expensive ways to break your camera when they fall over. my nikon is really heavy with the lens and everything so now im terrified.
i have about 150 dollars to spend maybe 200 if i skip a few nice dinners while im there but i really need something that fits in a standard backpack or a carry-on because im trying to travel light. i saw some things called travel tripods that fold backwards? that seems cool but is it sturdy? i also dont understand the difference between a ball head and the other ones with the handles. the handles look easier to move but everyone says ball heads are better for travel? why? i just want something i can set up fast without looking like a total idiot in front of other tourists.
is aluminum okay or do i absolutely need the carbon fiber stuff? the carbon ones are so expensive and i dont know if the weight difference is actually that big of a deal for a beginner. also i saw some brands like peak design and manfrotto and benro and i have no idea which one is actually good for a nikon. i just need it to not shake when the wind blows and not break my back while im hiking. sorry if this is a really dumb thing to ask i just feel super overwhelmed and i need to order something by friday so it gets here in time for my flight...
In my experience shooting in windy mountain conditions, you absolutely dont need to spend 600 bucks on a high-end tripod to keep a heavy body like the D850 stable. The best trick is using the weight hook at the bottom of the center column. Just hang your backpack from it when you set up. It instantly anchors the tripod and stops the wind from shaking your camera, meaning you can get away with a lighter, cheaper set of legs. For travel, you definitely want a ball head. The ones with handles are a nightmare to pack because they snag on everything in your backpack. Ball heads are compact, lock down fast, and are way easier to level on uneven mountain ground. Ive tried many budget setups over the years, and the Sirui Traveler 7C Carbon Fiber Tripod is probably your best bet. It is carbon fiber, weighs under 3 pounds, and easily handles the D850 payload. Best part is it usually runs around 160 dollars, so it fits your budget perfectly without sacrificing stability in the Alps.
TL;DR: Unfortunately, cheap travel tripods won't support a heavy D850 in the windy Alps. I had issues with cheap options causing blurry shots. For your budget, get the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Aluminum Tripod. It is sturdy enough for that heavy body, though unfortunately it is heavier than carbon.
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, the D850 is a total beast, so you need to be really careful about the payload ratings. Which lens are you taking to the Alps? A heavy zoom will change your balance point significantly. Might want to consider these:
