Are third-party body caps actually good for Nikon camera bodies?

Im seriously so done with the official Nikon ones constantly slipping off in my gear bag, just lost another one at a shoot in Chicago. Need a cheap pack of replacements before next weekend but dont want plastic shavings ruining my sensor.

I once ruined a sensor with plastic shavings. Now I check B&H reviews and only trust:

Just saw this thread and honestly, regarding what #2 said about "I once ruined a sensor with plastic shavings," that legit kept me up at night when I first switched to third-party gear. It is a real fear, but honestly, if you stick to decent brands, the shavings problem is usually just from the super bargain-bin, mystery-plastic caps that come with cheap adapters. If you need a bulk pack that isnt going to disintegrate in your bag, I have had decent luck with these:

  • Neewer Body Cap for Nikon F Mount
  • These are super cheap and come in packs. Honestly, I check the threads every time I put one on, but they have never shed on me.
  • Vivitar Body Cap for Nikon F Mount
  • A bit stiffer plastic. Feels more solid than the flimsy stock Nikon ones, actually. Basically, just dont force them on. If it feels like it is grinding or needs serious torque to lock, stop. That is usually where the shavings come from. If you are paranoid, just give the threads a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth before you mount it. It takes two seconds but gives so much peace of mind. The fear is real, but as long as you arent buying the absolute cheapest pack of 10 for like two bucks on some shady site, you should be totally fine.

Yeah, they work well. Ive been using cheap replacements for years because I lose them constantly too. You wont get plastic shavings if you buy decent brands. Here are two I am super satisfied with:

  • JJC L-R9 Body Cap and Rear Lens Cap Set for Nikon F Mount: These fit incredibly tight. I am happy with how secure they feel in my bag, they definitely wont slip off like the stock Nikon ones. No complaints at all.
  • Sensei Body Cap for Nikon F Mount: This one has a slightly softer plastic. It grips the mount really well and feels very secure. Either of these will do the job perfectly without ruining your sensor. Let me know if you want help finding a pack that ships fast before your trip.
