Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my kit lens for a while, but I’m finally ready to invest in a dedicated prime lens for portraits on my Nikon D7500. I’m really craving that sharp detail and creamy bokeh that my current zoom just can’t deliver. I’ve been torn between the 50mm f/1.8G and the 85mm f/1.8G, but I’m worried about how the crop factor might affect my shots in tighter indoor spaces. My budget is around $500, and I’m looking for something versatile enough for both headshots and half-body portraits. Between those two, or maybe a Sigma alternative, which prime lens do you think offers the best bang for your buck on a Nikon DSLR?
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is the winner. I went through this last year and honestly found a used one for $150... it's much better than 85mm for youre indoor work.
Hey, I feel u on wanting that bokeh! In my experience, the crop factor on your D7500 is the real deal-breaker here. An 85mm becomes a 127mm equivalent, which is literally impossible to use in a small room for anything but tight headshots.
Here's what I recommend:
- Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G – This is basically your best bet. It gives you a 75mm equivalent field of view which is the sweet spot for both headshots and half-body stuff indoors. It's sharp even wide open.
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art for Nikon – If ur doing a lot of environmental portraits or full-body indoors, this gives a more "natural" 45mm feel.
Honestly, stick with the 50mm. It hits that $500 budget easily—you can even find them for under $200 used—and the bokeh is plenty creamy tho. The 85mm is just too tight for indoor work on DX... gl!

Had a moment to think... I went through this last year. I actually picked up the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G and I guess it's been the perfect choice. I'm sooo happy with it! Honestly, even in my tiny apartment, the 85mm would've been a nightmare. The 50mm works well for basically everything and the bokeh is reallyyy creamy. No complaints here, best bang for ur buck under $500 tho!!
