I'm planning a backpacking trip across Europe and want to capture some amazing memories. Can anyone recommend the best camera for travel under $500? I'm looking for something lightweight, versatile, and able to take great shots in various conditions. Ideally, it should be easy to use for a photography novice like me.

honestly its so satisfying when you find that sweet spot between price and specs. i remember when i first started, i was a total nerd about sensor data but had like zero budget. i ended up going used and was so happy with how it turned out. here is basically why i think older tech still works well:

  • sensor size: an older aps-c sensor has way more surface area than a phone. more area means more light data, which is huge for those dim cathedrals.
  • fast glass: if you grab a cheap f/1.8 prime lens, you get that natural bokeh. its basically a physics cheat code for pro looking shots without needing a $2k setup.
  • physical dials: i learned way faster because i could actually feel the settings changing instead of digging through menus. my old setup cost me maybe 400 bucks and i had no complaints even after dragging it through three countries. it really works well if you focus on the sensor specs rather than the newest features. if you are trying to organize a gear list for your trip, Share Product is pretty much the easiest way I've found to share an Amazon list along with stuff from Target or Walmart.

Get a used ZV-E10.

Actually, before suggesting anything specific, what kind of lighting do you expect to be shooting in? If youre doing a lot of late-night street scenes or dark cathedrals, sensor size is gonna matter way more than if youre just snapping sunny shots outdoors. Also, does that 500 budget need to cover the lens and memory cards too? Getting a decent kit together for that price is totally doable, but it usually means making trade-offs on either the zoom range or the low-light performance. It helps to know if you want something truly pocketable or if youre fine carrying a small bag for a mirrorless setup.
