What lens should I buy for my Sony a7IV if I only want to carry one thing while traveling? I'm totally new to this and honestly pretty confused by all the numbers.

Im going to Italy next month and have about $900 to spend on a lens that can do everything. Is there a simple option that isnt too heavy?

Just found this... shooting scenery or street? In my experience, weight is huge for travel.

Quick reply while I'm grabbin coffee! Honestly, if you want one lens to rule them all for that a7IV without breaking the bank or your back, you gotta look at the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. Its absolutely fantastic for Italy and fits your budget perfectly!! I've used this setup tons of times and its basically the gold standard for all-in-one travel zooms right now. Heres why it works so well for a beginner:

  • Focal Range: At 28mm you can get those big shots of the Colosseum, but then you can zoom all the way to 200mm to catch details on far-away statues. That range is amazing.
  • Aperture: The f/2.8 at the wide end is a total game changer for me. Most travel zooms start at f/4 or higher, so having that extra light is incredible for dinner shots or dim churches.
  • Weight: It is super light for what it does. You wont feel like youre lugging a heavy brick around Rome all day which is a huge plus. If you want something with a bit more premium build and can find it on sale or used, the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is another professional choice. You lose some zoom range on the long end, but the 24mm is slightly wider which helps in tight European streets. Honestly tho, the Tamron is the better value for your $900 budget and that f/2.8 aperture is just so useful for blurrier backgrounds. Youre gonna have an amazing time!
