I'm heading to Japan next month and really want to avoid swapping lenses constantly on my a7IV. Its a once in a lifetime trip so I need something reliable. I've narrowed it down to the Sony 24-105mm f4 G and the Tamron 28-200mm f2.8-5.6. The Sony is super sharp and has that constant f4, but the Tamron has way more reach for those far away temple details. My budget is capped at $1100 and I'm really torn.

  • weight under 800g
  • weather sealed for the rain
  • sharp enough for 33mp

Leaning towards the Sony for the build quality but is 105mm enough for a general travel lens or should I just go for the Tamron...

the mtf charts show the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS has much higher resolution at the edges for your 33mp sensor.

  • sony: constant f/4 and superior weather sealing
  • Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD: lighter at 575g but the variable aperture is less ideal for low light temples the sony build is definitely more reliable for japan. lmk if you need more spec comparisons.
