Leaving for Tokyo in two weeks and realized my prime kit is gonna be a total nightmare in the crowds. Im usually a 23mm f1.4 purist but I need one single lens for the X-T4 that handles street and landscape without swaps.

Is the 16-80mm f4 worth the tradeoff or should I just stick to the 18-55 kit lens?

Go with the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR! I used it for a month in Japan and it was fantastic for everything.

  • 16-80mm: The constant f4 and extra range are huge for Tokyo.
  • Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS: Its smaller but missing that 16mm wide end really hurts for cityscapes. Honestly, the 16-80 is way more versatile. Love it!

^ This. Also, honestly... I had a pretty rough time with the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR on my last trip. I really wanted to love it for the range, but the edge softness at the long end was super disappointing, especially coming from that sharp 23mm prime you're used to. It just felt a bit mushy compared to what the X-T4 sensor can actually do. If you want better optics and can handle the extra bulk, look at these:

  • Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR: Heavy, but the image quality is basically prime-level. No OIS tho.
  • Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: Constant f/2.8 and great stabilization for those neon night shots. Quick tips for the trip:
  • Stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 for better corner sharpness on those zooms.
  • Use the electronic shutter in crowded shrines to stay quiet. Tokyo is amazing but dont let gear frustration ruin the vibes. Youll find something that works!
