What is the best budget travel lens for the Canon EOS R that actually performs well without costing more than the camera body? Im leaving for a trip to Japan in two weeks and I just realized my old EF 24-105 f/4 L is way too heavy for walking all day and the adapter makes the balance feel so weird.
Ive shot on DSLRs for a decade but this mirrorless transition is stressing me out because all the RF glass is either cheap plastic or three thousand dollars. I need something versatile for street stuff, maybe the 24-105 STM? Or is that a waste of money? My budget is $500 max because the flight was expensive... help me choose before I panic buy the wrong thing.

Honestly, I totally get the stress... mirrorless was supposed to be smaller but that adapter definitely ruins the balance. In my experience, when you are walking 20k steps a day in Japan, weight is everything. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is actually a solid bet despite what gear snobs say because I have found it performs way better than expected for the price.
- Center sharpness is surprisingly good on the RF 24-105 STM
- It is small enough that you wont stand out as much in crowded streets
- Pair it with a Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for night shots since it fits in a pocket Dont sweat the slow aperture too much, the EOS R sensor handles high ISO well enough for travel stuff. Youll be much happier with the lighter kit. Lemme know if you need any other gear tips for the trip!

Honestly, been super satisfied with the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM. It works well and is a reliable choice. Or maybe the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM for wider street shots.
