What is the best lens for portrait photography using Canon R6?

I am actually losing my mind trying to figure this out. I bought the Canon R6 a few weeks ago because my sister is getting married in July and I promised I would take her engagement photos at the park near our house in Seattle, but I have no idea what I am doing. I thought if I bought an expensive camera the pictures would just look professional right away but they look exactly like my iPhone photos and honestly maybe worse. I am using the lens that came in the box, I think it says 24-105 on it? But everything looks so plain and I want that really blurry background look where the person stands out and everything else is just soft.

I started looking online for a portrait lens and I am so confused. There are so many numbers and letters and it feels like everyone is speaking a different language. Some people say I need an 85mm and some say 50mm and then there is this thing about f-stops like 1.2 or 1.8 and the price difference is insane. I saw one lens that cost more than my car and I almost cried. I already spent a huge chunk of my savings on the camera body so I really only have about 700 dollars left to spend on a lens. I need something that is going to work for a beginner because I dont have time to learn all the technical stuff before next month.

Is there a specific lens that is just the standard for portraits on the R6? I keep seeing stuff about adapters too and that just adds another layer of stuff I dont understand. Do I need an adapter or can I just buy a lens that clicks right on? I just want my sisters photos to look special and not like I took them on a flip phone. Sorry if this is a really basic question but I am totally stuck and I dont want to waste my last few hundred dollars on the wrong thing... what is actually the best lens for this?

Listen, you have plenty of cash left to get that pro look! The 24-105 lens you have is basically just for vacations, it wont give you that creamy background blur you're dreaming of. Since you want to keep it simple and stay under budget, here are two paths that are way better than what you have:

  • Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM
  • This is the ultimate budget lens. Its tiny, cheap, and lets in way more light than your kit lens. It makes the background look amazing for about 200 dollars and clicks right onto your R6 without any extra parts.
  • Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM used with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R
  • This combo is legendary for portraits. The 85mm focal length is magic for faces because it makes people look their best and creates heavy blur. Youll need the adapter for it to fit your camera, but the results are incredible. Ngl, just grab the 50mm and start practicing. The lower that f-number is, the more blur you get. Youll be taking pro-level shots in no time!

Since youre on a budget, just grab the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM. It clicks right onto your R6, no adapters needed. I have used tons of glass over the years and this one is a steal... it will give you that blurry background way better than your current kit lens.

ngl, I have the exact same problem and it is actually exhausting. I have been researching for like three months now and still haven't pulled the trigger because I am so worried about making a mistake and wasting my money. You really have to be careful with these reviews because what works for one person might be a total flop for us beginners... I just want that dreamy look without the nightmare price tag. Make sure to double check the return policies on anything you look at because $700 is still a huge chunk of change to lose if it doesn't work out. Actually, my sister was just looking at parks in Seattle for her own photos too, and now I'm worried about the lighting in those public spots since there are so many trees and shadows to deal with. It feels like every time I try to solve one problem, three more pop up. I've been trying to find some price comparisons with Share Product extension but honestly I'm still just as confused as day one. But yeah, let me know if you find a real answer because I'm totally lost too.

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
